The Hammer horrors, which started in the 50s, revitalised the whole genre. Startlingly innovative in their day, and making stunning use of colour in a time when most British cinema was drably monochrome, they were as popular with audiences as they were hated by critics. Problem is, what was innovative for a few years had got pretty tired by the mid-60s.
