The Hammer horrors, which started in the 50s, revitalised the whole genre. Startlingly innovative in their day, and making stunning use of colour in a time when most British cinema was drably monochrome, they were as popular with audiences as they were hated by critics. Problem is, what was innovative for a few years had got pretty tired by the mid-60s. Part of the problem is that Hammer were unable to compete with the more extreme and interesting horror movies cropping up in Europe and America (and Britain, too – Hammer never had a director of the calibre of Michael Reeves).
