Advantages: A superb story-acting, direction, script. A+++

Disadvantages: 1 silly moment later on

This is one Dr Who story I have always adored. Not the most typical Pertwee story, yes UNIT are all there...but there is no cosy family atmosphere that creeps in in later seasons. Indeed this is very dark stuff in places. Taut with drama and a superb sense of tension, one can almost feel the heat of the Stahlman Inferno project radiating from the screen. OK, if you knew me you would realise I love apocalyptic scenarios and sideways universe stories so I get 2 for the price of one here. But at 7 episodes this never drags and the viewer is left exhausted at some fantastic cliffhangers and a cracking performance from Pertwee who is debatedly never better than here. Worth mentioning Nicholas Courtney as well, a very unsettling and scary turn as the the sadistic Brigade-Leader.

Negatives? Well one silly bit of acting from John Levene does raise a chuckle later on in the story...but this is a very minor niggle.

Over the years the Earth has been put under threat many times and the Doctor always saves the day. Here things are different...and the drama is very high indeed.

A real classic.

Gleemaid.

Summary: One of the greatest ever Dr Who stories.
