Advantages: K9 is a great character

Disadvantages: K9 and company's story is not good

This DVD box set features two DOCTOR WHO stories, THE INVISIBLE ENEMY and K9 AND COMPANY. The first one is the first story to feature The Doctor's robot dog K9, which was a present to him from Professor Marinus who was a character who helped cure The Doctor from an alien virus around he year 5000. The second story is not really a DOCTOR WHO story at all, instead it was the first spin-off from the series, which was intended to lead to a series, although it was unsuccessful. It stars Elisabeth Sladen as The Doctor's former companion Sarah Jane Smith, who has returned to Earth and is given a new K9 as a present from The Doctor (who doesn't appear on screen himself). Together Sarah Jane and K9 stop a witch's covern from carrying out their evil deeds.

As a mid-30s Doctor Who fan I have to say that I have a soft spot for K9. When I was a child Tom Baker was The Doctor, and K9 was his trusted dog. I never had a pet dog and so I was able to pretend that K9 was my own. This nostalgic memory still holds when watching THE INVISIBLE ENEMY and I really enjoyed re-watching this story. K9 AND COMPANY is a different kettle of fish though - without The Doctor the story doesn't really work, and the story itself is poor - K9 should be battling aliens, not witches.

If like me you are a mid-30s Doctor Who fan then you would probably enjoy this set, but if you are new to the series thanks to the wildly successful David Tennant incarnation you would probably be a little bored by these stories.
