Advantages: Great story, Sophie Aldred. Aaah., Daleks! Explosions!
Disadvantages: Scottish Doctor Overacting Syndrome, Incredibly bad sleeve design
This story gets a lot of stick in some fan circles, but I think that everyone secretly knows it's one of the best Doctor Who stories. Ever. Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first - Sylvester McCoy rolls his 'R's, talks too loudly and ruins lines with silly voices and so forth. The plot is identical to Silver Nemesis. And the Doctor talks a Dalek to death. Oh, and the cliff hanger to episode two where a group of Daleks surround Ace, and just chant 'exterminate' for what seems like about ten minutes. That aside, this is a real cracker of a story. The BBC have always been good with period drama, and this 1963-set tale is brilliantly done. The setting 'feels' just right. There are surprisingly few dating gaffes, so the illusion is very well maintained. The plot, for what it's worth, centres on the Doctor having left a stellar manipulator on earth in 1963. Having twigged that the Daleks want it, he conspires to let them have it. Confused? You will be. All that rubbish aside, this story is well executed. The peripheral characters (mostly army types) are well acted and effective, and the effects are largely superb. The new Special Weapons Dalek (essentially a howitzer with a Dalek base) causes some gorgeous explosions, and the Dalek shuttle craft (a full size prop, lowered into a school playground by a crane) is also fairly good. The atmosphere carries the story, really, but that's no bad thing. There's a nice scene set in a cafe, where the Doctor talks about consequences with the butler from 'The Fresh Prince of Bel Air'. To summarise - there are explosions, nazis, big guns, Daleks, stunts, space ships and some really creepy plot twists. It's one of those stories you can watch again and again. This DVD is a particularly good one. The commentary (Sylvester McCoy & Sophie 'eternal youth' Aldred) is worth listening to, the outtakes reel is qu
ite good, and the multi-angle explosion shots are... impressive. Watch the gate explosion scene and check out the Daleks behind the gate that have been accidentally blown to bits. Now that's what I call an explosion. So, yes. Buy this DVD. Oh, one more gripe. The front cover art is just astonishingly bad. I cannot imagine what posessed someone to choose a poor quality photo of a recently blown-up prop Dalek, complete with smoke haze for the cover of such a fine DVD. It is almost literally beyond belief. Seriously, I'm goggle-eyed in astonishment.

- 30/09/02 Hiya. I just came to write the same as Karenuk really. You have written some good stuff here but if you post it all so close together people wont read it as they will think that you are a churner and churners are avoided. Great stuff though.

- 30/09/02 We don't have a DVD player yet, but are all Dr. Who fans here. I saw the DVD of this on a friend's PC & it looked really good.
I see the covers are improving now, but yes, the earlier ones were awful.
It's a shame you are getting so few reads, as what you write is good. If you space out your opinions (one or two a day), as well as take time to read & rate lots of other people's opinions, you will receive a higher number of reads.
