SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE is the 1st 'Doctor Who' story starring Jon Pertwee, who was the third actor to play The Doctor, between 1970 and 1974. This story was shown in January 1970 The story, which takes place over 4 episodes, also stars Caroline John and Nicholas Courtney as The Doctor's companions Liz Shaw and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart respectively. By this time in the DOCTOR WHO saga the programme makers had decided that it was time to curb The Doctor's travels a little, and instead had him stranded on Earthl being placed in exile by the Time Lords as a punishment for all of his interferences to date. This story has The Doctor and his companions ... Read the complete review

Its always exciting in Doctor Who when a new actor takes over the lead of the show. So seeing Jon Pertwee in his first story really was a pivotal point in Doctor Who history. The previous Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton, had seen ratings fall over his tenure as The Doctor and this meant that a vital overhaul was required. Troughton felt that his time was coming to an end and time to hand over to another person. This gave the producers a real opportunity to kick start the show.... this time in colour. Originally broadcast on 3rd January 1970, Spearhead from Space is a four part story, Based on events in the previous story called The War Games, Pertwee's ... Read the complete review

"Spearhead from Space" not only marked the beginning of the Third Doctor's era, but also saw the programme being moved into a new dimension, in which, for much of it, there would be little time travel or space exploration. However - as this initial story was to reveal - that would only mean that the aliens and monsters would simply come to the Doctor. Forced to regenerate and deliberately stranded on Earth by the other Time Lords at the end of "War Games", this next plot sees the Doctor almost immediately caught up in a battle to prevent Earth from being overtaken by a race named the Nestenes, a group which is able to assimilate plastic to make ... INTRODUCTION We only got a DVD player in January, so have only just began to buy our favourite films and TV programmes on DVD. As my husband and I love Doctor Who, as do our four children, it was inevitable that an early DVD purchase would include a Doctor Who release and here it is – Spearhead From Space. This story is special to fans of the series as it is the first story shot in colour and the first adventure for Jon Pertwee - the third face of the loveable time traveller. It is special for me because it was being filmed when I was born (October 1969) and it is the story I was asked to write the detailed synopsis of, for inclusion in the Doctor ... Before I tell you about this excellent DVD it?s necessary for me to give you a brief plot outline. If you don?t? want to know close your eyes now??you can open them after three paragraphs! The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) is exiled to Earth by the Time Lords and has had his ability to operate the TARDIS taken away from him. The TARDIS lands him on Earth in the middle of a massive meteorite shower. He is found by UNIT troops and taken to a nearby hospital where he falls into a coma. When he wakes he is confused and appears to know The Brigadier (head of UNIT in the UK) although no-one knows him. The meteorites turn out to be globes (like eggs) containing ...
