Yet these people are not the only sentient beings nearby, for one by one a number of other astronauts have disappeared and the answer lies with some robots and a mysterious alien. As events become clearer the Doctor and his companion find they must prevent a Sontaran, one Field Major Styre, from continuing a series of sadistic experiments and a nearby Sontaran fleet from using that knowledge to invade earth. Premium Review Doctor Who - The Sontaran Experiment (DVD): The Sontaran Experiment (331 words)
by - written on 29/01/08 (Very useful, 15 readings)
Rating:

THE SONTARAN EXPERIMENT is the 3rd 'Doctor Who' story starring Tom Baker, who was the fourth actor to play The Doctor, between 1974 and 1981. This story was shown in February / March 1975. The story, which takes place over 2 episodes, also stars Elisabeth Sladen as The Doctor's companion Sarah Jane Smith, who recently gained her own series on Children's BBC, THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES. The story finds The Doctor, Sarah Jane, and another companion Harry, getting involved in a battle with a Sontaran who is carrying out some unpleasant experiments on members of a human colony. This story is quite odd, as it is one of the few Classic 'Who' stories which ...  Read the complete review

What I am reviewing is the Doctor Who DVD "The Sontaran experiment" Broadcast 22 Feb - 1 Mar 1975. 4.3 ratio Main soundtrack mono Optional Dolby digital 49 minutes feature In 1975 when Tom Baker was making his mark as the Doctor after Robot and The ark in space there was set to be a new story coming up involving the Daleks but as the ark in space was originally meant to be a six part story instead of four there needed to be padding between ark and genesis. Producer Philip Hinchcliffe took the chance in doing this as it would be better for the long run. It was decided to bring back the Sontarans, a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Doctor Who - The Sontaran Experiment (DVD): The Doctor may be tested (579 words)
by - written on 08/02/09 (Very useful, 40 readings)
Rating:

One of the fourth Doctor's earlier stories, "The Sontaran Experiment" allows us to observe those enemies of the TimeLord in a different light, not just as the war hardened armies who will not turn their backs in battle, but as beings who are prepared to inflict a number of cruel and torturous experiments upon others, in order to observe their reactions. Consequently we are given a new dimension to the Sontarans and another reason for understanding their threat. The initial episode commences with the Doctor and his companions materialising upon a future earth, by the Nerva space station. An examination of the structure reveals it to be damaged and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Not My Favourite Story. (256 words)
by - written on 19/12/08 (Very useful, 91 readings)
Rating:

The Sontaran Experiment was originally broadcast between the 22nd February and the 1st March 1975. It stars Tom Baker (the forth doctor), as well as Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) and Ian Marter (Harry). After transmatting from Nerva, they all find themselves on Earth, that has been long since abandoned. But they soon discover that they are not alone, finding a shipwrecked crew, that seem to be being hunted down one by one. The Doctor then discovers a Sontaran (a warrior race of clones) who is conduction experiments, to determine the tolerances of humans before an invasion. This definitely isn't one of my favorite classic Doctor Who stories. ...  Read the complete review
