Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)
Ben Stiller plays White Goodman, fitness guru and owner of a chain of globo-gyms. Goodman takes a shine to a run-down gym in a prestigious location owned and managed by Peter LaFleur (played by the always watchable Vince Vaughn). The gym is home to a disparate bunch of losers who use the facilities as a social club as much as a place of fitness. To cut a short story even shorter, our heroes have to raise a load of cash very quickly to hold-off the aggressive buy-out of the property. They decide that the easiest way to do this is form a dodgeball team and compete in a National tournament which sees them ultimately pitched against the Purple Cobra's, Whites very own team...
Stiller, Vaughn and the supporting cast clearly had a good time making this movie and it shows. It's an hour-and-a-half in which you can put your brain in neutral and just enjoy the silliness. It's a simple comedy perfect for a Friday or Saturday night spent at home. In fact, my wife and I still impersonate the Purple Cobra's on-court march (you'll have to watch it to understand). Yes, we do have problems...
The DVD features a full length audio commentary by Stiller and Vaughn, along with the Director/Writer which sees them all in fine form chatting about the movie, sharing anecdotes and observations. They are such a funny bunch that this bonus is almost worth the asking price alone!
Dodgeball is 88 minutes long and rated as a 15 due to some language and sexual references. It's currently available for the ridiculous sums of £3.98 on Amazon and £3.99 on Play.com - DVD rentals cost almost that much so it's great value and you'll almost certainly watch it more than once.
And remember "If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball".
Summary: Perfect for a night in
