... Finally, the horror comes from both the supernatural element and the copious amounts of blood which decorate the screen when characters are attacked. No one element dominates the other (although the comedy element is strongest in the first part; the horror in the later stages) and everything works well together. True, Dog Soldiers is not terribly original and gleefully borrows from dozens of other films. Obvious (and often acknowledged) influences are An American Werewolf in London Assault on Precinct 13, Zulu and N...more

Dog Soldiers (DVD): Dog soldiers (412 words)

Made in 2002, and mainly filmed in Luxembourg, (but with some scenes shot in Glen Affric, in the highlands of Scotland), this tongue in cheek horror turned out to be a great film. Starring Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee, Emma Cleasby, Liam Cunningham Leslie Simpson, Chris Robson and Darren Morfitt. When i first began watching this film i thought this was a bad B-movie from hell but as i got into it i was gripped to my seat. The story of a small squad of soldiers are on a mission in the highlands of Scotland, little do they know that they are bait in a dangerous game of cat and mouse. When they bump into a charming looking local girl named Megan, ...  Read the complete review

Dog Soldiers is one of those Low Budget horror movies, but those are the ones that I like the best, they seem to create a more scary atmosphere than the hyped up, loads of money spent on make up films that we see far to often at the moment! It’s also British aswell, which is rather nice, this film just proves that us British can make a decent film in our Country. Well done lads! Dog Soldiers was directed by Neil Marshall, who I have to say I have never heard of, apart from when watching the film, mindyou, he’s only 30! He was also responsible for another film, which was a little disappointing in my view, Killing Time which was released back in 1998. ...  Read the complete review

Dog Soldiers (DVD): An English Werewolf in Scotland (1046 words)

Poor old Mrs SWSt! She does suffer as a result of her husband's eclectic taste in films! When I first met her, her staple film diet was limited to rom-coms (urgh!).This has meant I've had to put in a lot of hard work over the last few years "educating" her to some of the (ahem) top quality films that she has missed out on. Oh, who am I kidding? What it really means is that she's been forced to watch an awful lot of trash, since I rather enjoy low budget B Movie-style horror films. Recently, she was subjected to yet another, as we sat down to watch Neil Marshall's bonkers first film, Dog Soldiers. It sees a group of squaddies sent on ...  Read the complete review

I'm a big fan of horror and monster movies are my favourite within the genre. My main passion is for zombies, but I'm fairly open minded as long as the monsters have something special to catch my interest. Dog Soldiers is a werewolf movie and I've seen it several times over, most recently at the weekend when it was aired on the channel Film4. The DVD can currently be found on www.amazon.co.uk for the price of £3.97. ~~~DETAILS~~~ Region 2 1-disc DVD Released: 2001 Running time: 1 hour 41 minutes Directed by: Neil Marshall Starring: Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Liam Cunningham Tagline: Six men. I'm sitting grinning like an idiot ... I've just finished watching Dog Soldiers. If action, laughs, guns, violence and the "swearer's swearer" Sean Pertwee leading a fine cast of foul mouthed squadies in a fight to the finish against a pack of werewolves sounds like your cup of tea; then praise the European film makers who put the money up for Dog Soldiers. The plot is no more complex than it needs to be; a group of British soldiers are sent on maneuvers against a team of British special forces. Things start to get out of control when they find the remains of the special forces team, slaughtered before they could fire off a single ...  Read the complete review
