Dogma (DVD) ... released 21 October, 2002 at Cinema Club / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Bored of being eternally banished to earth, two errant angels hatch a plan to sneak back into heaven. Unfortunately, if they use the required loophole in religious Dogma, they'll prove God fallible and undo the very fabric of the universe, ending all existence. Bummer. Enter the distant grand niece of Jesus Christ and an army of angels, beautiful mythical figures, saintly apostles and all entities good and holy. And Jay and Silent Bob. The phrase "it's a religious comedy" must have caused Hollywood to have a sacred cow. And, as Smith's first attempt to move away from the early lo-fi, character-centred, relationship-based comedies (Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy) toward the narrative-led big-budget spectacular, Dogma is not without problems. Proving controversial on release, stones were cast by churchgoers and Smith devotees alike. Frothing-mouthed extremists levelled charges of blasphemy at the more colourful elements (a Malcolm X-style 13th apostle, the crucifix being binned as uncool and God not being a white-bearded patriarch), leaving the devoutly Catholic Smith, who's intentions were to celebrate the mystery and beauty of religion, completely bemused. Equally, the Luddite Clerks obsessives who wrote it off as "Smith-gone-Hollywood" should have recognised that the script was written way before he gave us his black-and-white debut. More ambitious than his previous mates-roped-in cheapies, the apocryphal and apocalyptic Dogma is still blessed with water-into-wine performances, pop culture gags, postmodern self-referencing and stoopid shagging jokes. Though it may not be wholly miraculous, this is still a righteous movie; and, in comparison with the average big-buck formulaic Hollywood evil, it's practically saintly. On the DVD: Dogma's budget outstripped the early Smith films by miles, and the 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen transfer does it justice, with divine colour and heavenly sound. The picture quality of the extras--including trailers, TV spots and cast and crew interviews--is not so good and pixilation occurs throughout. The interviews are provocative enough, though, giving huge insight into the film. And it's quite something to see Smith looking all "Clark Kent" in his civvies. --Paul Eisinger

They discover a loophole in Catholic Dogma, where if they travel through the archway of a specific church, their sins will be forgiven and they will be able to return to heaven, thereby proving God wrong. Of course, the problem is that to prove God wrong would unmake the world, and thus Metatron (Alan Rickman), the voice of God, approaches abortion clinic worker Bethany Sloane (Li...more

Crowned Review Dogma (DVD): Life can be a right dog ma! (1358 words)

I loved Kevin Smith films - I say loved because when they first came out I loved them. They rooted for the small guy, gave a fresh and imaginative twist on small events which reflected wider society. The last time that Dogma (1999), the fourth of his films was on the television I set a reminder to watch it. I was quite looking forward to watching this film again and then something happened. I was watching it and I thought either I am getting old and (shudder) I've grown up or this film really hasn't worn very well. For the purposes of this review we shall assume the latter! So what is wrong with it? Well nothing really. It is funny, it is looking at quite deep ...  Read the complete review

Regardless of the consequences, what would you do if you were handed a scrap of paper telling you about the loophole that has presented itself so that you, and your banished mate, can return to heaven? After thousands of years stuck on Earth, Bartleby and Loki find themselves in this position and grab it with both hands. Of course, the fallen angel of death sees this as the perfect opportunity to go on a killing spree, but after that, they are on there way. However, the powers that be in Heaven get wind of this and are not at all happy. As the two angels were banished from Heaven on God’s decree for not carrying out their duties (which in turn meant Angels ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Dogma (DVD): It Can Be Hell Getting Into Heaven (940 words)

One of my favourite directors of recent times has to be Kevin Smith. His films don’t have the big blockbuster appeal to them but they do seem to attract a huge cult following. It was Dogma that really got me into Smith’s work having come across the end of it on Sky Movies one night a few years back. I was intrigued to find out the rest of the plot and ended up buying the DVD a few days later to sit down and watch it. Since then it has become one of my favourite films. This is still a cult film but it seems to be reaching a much wider audience than it did originally and for films like this that is always a bonus for the people discovering it. Crowned Review Excellent - Smiths best yet (902 words)

Kevin Smiths goes Hollywood and produces his best film yet. To be fair even without all the hype about the film being about blasphemy cos I love Kevin Smith, Hell I even love Mallrats! But its comes as no surprise that this film became a target for churcg goers all over the world, the website even has hate leters of the month. But Kevin Smith has never been known for his tact, only his ability to write great comedies with his outrageous, subversive sense of humour that is very observingly commenting on our society. Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) are two fallen Angels. They have been banished from Heaven by God and are forced to walk the Earth ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Dogma (DVD): DOGma, or GODma? (593 words)

I've always been a fan of Kevin Smith's movies. Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy were all (in my humble opinion) very clever and funny movies, and they all interlink in some way with common characters and refences to events and characters from other movies, although you don't need to watch any of them to enjoy any other one, they are all standalone movies. Dogma is a film which has got a lot of people angry because of it's subject matter - God and religion. These people were angry about the way that Smith was treating religion, but I can't personally see why they should get upset. Smith doesn't try and tell people that God doesn't ...  Read the complete review
