Advantages: Great cast, fab sountrack & interesting storyline.

Disadvantages: Nothing! :o)

What can I say...I love this film! If you want something a bit unusual, dark but funny, that glues to the screen then this is the movie for you! It's packed with superb performances from top actors/actresses, a strange but unique & interesting storyline, a well-written script and played alongside a strong sountrack.

... Storyline ...

"Twenty eight days, six hours, fourty two minutes, twelve seconds. That is when the world will end."

This is a tough one without giving it away so I'll skim over this quickly. Basically, a troubled teen named Donnie Darko (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) experiences some unsettling visions. Over the course of a month, several small storylines intertwine with the main character to provide intrigue and comedy. Along the way donnie falls for the new girl in town, Gretchen (Jena Malone), and together they experience and unveil unusual happenings at their school. It may sound like a typical boy meets girl, strange things happen, people die...but it's not. At all. I can prove this by telling you a giant bunny makes an appearance! Unfortunately it's not a happy bunny and things turn quite dark and sinister when Donnie is forced re-evaulate what goes against reason and sanity.

... Performances ...

I think that the script and cast goes hand in hand, with each performance adding to the impact of the film. You'll recognise most of the characters who are played very convincingly by top actors, including:

Donnie Darko - Jake Gyllenhaal
Gretchen - Jena Malone
Jim Cunningham - Patrick Swayze
Rose Darko - Mary McDonnell
Eddie Darko - Holmes Osbourne
Elizabeth Darko - Maggie Gyllenhaal
Professor Monnitoff - Noah Wyle
Karen - Drew Barymore

And the list goes on...

... General ...

Donnie Darko has a run time of 108 minutes which is the perfect length as it's constant entertainment but it doesn't drag on like some films do. This film is a cert 15 as it does contain some bad language, scene of drug use and some moderate violence. Although some may argue this is more of a cult film with no real storyline or ending as such, I think it's an intriguing, psychological, entertaining masterpiece.
With the directors cut you get a few additional features including:

Audio Commentary
Artwork & Website galler
Trailer & TV spots
Featurette
Cast & crew interviews
B roll clips
Deleted & extended scenes

You can buy Donnie Darko on DVD now for around £5 which is a bargain for such a well-produced movie.

... Soundtrack ...

In addition to the music produced especially for this film, which compliments it beautifully, some other popular tracks also feature including:

Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
INXS - Never Tear Us Apart
The Church - Under The Milkyway
Oingo Boingo - Stay
Duran Duran - Notorious

... Overall ...

A fantastic film which is definitely worth a watch! The whole piece runs smoothly, with the music, acting, script, it all just 'fits'. It has a dark chilling edge whilst being able to cleverly interject humour. I absolutely love this film, but don't be put off if you don't quite 'get it' the first time around. Second time it only gets better and you'll get hooked on it like me. Just talking about this makes me want to put it in my DVD player again...at least this DVD has had a lot of use!

Summary: Who wouldn't love a giant bunny?!
