Doom (Extended Edition, DVD) ... Scott ... / DVD released 03 April, 2006 at Universal Pictures UK / Features of the DVD: PAL / Grab your BFG and get ready to kick some Martian-demon butt in Doom, another entry in the increasingly crowded videogame-to-movie genre. The Rock plays Sarge, the commander of a squad of Marines sent to investigate a disturbance at a scientific research facility on Mars. Among the squad is John Grimm (Karl Urban, who played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings), who turns out to have had a previous relationship with Samantha (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day), the scientist who's accompanying the Marines in order to retrieve some vital data from the facility. Based on id Software's legendary first-person shooter, Doom tries its best to look like a game, with dark, angled corridors, ferocious creatures appearing out of nowhere, and a variety of lethal weapons that will, like the aforementioned BFG, warm the cockles of a gamer's heart. There's also one memorable sequence that actually turns the movie into a first-person shooter; the good news is that in the context of the whole film, it's not quite as goofy as it might have been. And that's not a bad frame of reference for the film in general. Considering the game-to-movie field includes such duds as Wing Commander, if you go into Doom with low expectations, you'll probably find it a surprisingly respectable horror/sci-fi thriller in the Resident Evil vein (including its somewhat obligatory subplot of corporate wrongdoing). Also in its favor is that it's unabashedly R-rated, for the extreme gore that is a trademark of the game. After all, the purpose of the movie is to pack scares and thrills into a setting that gamers will quickly recognize. In that sense, it qualifies as a success. --David Horiuchi

Doom was originally a computer game. Quite a famous one. It was pretty basic, with the idea of finding a 'gate' on one of the Mars moons. Many years later the gates open and all hell was let loose on the moon. This is where 'Doomguy' (he doesnt have a real name) come in. He has to take care of all the Demons ,and Zombies that have taken over the moon. Its pretty basic stuff as shooters go. You would think that when making a film out of such a famous game, they would stick to the basic idea. This is not so. With the introduction of a new storyline, the only thing keeping to the game is the name. The monsters featured in the film are similar looking to those in ...  Read the complete review

Whose bright idea was it to try and make movies out of computer games? Find them and shoot them for me, will you, because I’ll be arsed if I can think of any good ones. Neither one of the Tomb Raider movies really lived up to the promise. Neither did either of the Resident Evil ones. Alone in the Dark was pants and the list goes on. The latest addition to the ranks comes in the shape of Andrzej Barthowiak’s adaption of the immensely popular horror / shoot ‘em up, Doom. Barthowiak’s track record doesn’t inspire excitement. He previously directed Cradle 2 The Grave (a dodgy Steven Seagal actioner) Exit Wounds (another quite dodgy Steven Seagal actioner) and Romeo Must Die ...  Read the complete review

DOOM It’s official! Computer game conversions to the big screen suck the hairy scrotum of Satan’s plums. Yep, it’s a dire genre of film, filled with an abundance of poorly conceived computer generated monstrosities, shockingly designed plots that bare little resemblance to the original computer games intent, acting of the “can’t find my way out of a paper-bag” variety and shoddy direction from an MTV generation of movie-makers suffering from severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Still, it keeps the kids happy; their short attention spans finding the directors mangled perception of their favourite Playstation games somewhat accessible and ...  Read the complete review

Ok so I wasn't expecting much when I went to see this film. Anyone who has seen Mortal Combat (awful), Resident Evil (pretty bad), Streetfighter (should have been banned) will know why I was so wary. Historically films based on games aren't much better than games based on films. For those of you who don't know Doom is based on a 'first person shooter' game that's been on a number of formats, the latest edition of which is Doom3. Thankfully I don't know much about the game so I'm not going to get caught up ranting on about the game or comparing the film to the game too much. So it didn't look good, it's based on a game, The Rock plays one of the main characters ...  Read the complete review
