Doom (Extended Edition, DVD) ... Scott ... / DVD released 03 April, 2006 at Universal Pictures UK / Features of the DVD: PAL / Grab your BFG and get ready to kick some Martian-demon butt in Doom, another entry in the increasingly crowded videogame-to-movie genre. The Rock plays Sarge, the commander of a squad of Marines sent to investigate a disturbance at a scientific research facility on Mars. Among the squad is John Grimm (Karl Urban, who played Eomer in The Lord of the Rings), who turns out to have had a previous relationship with Samantha (Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day), the scientist who's accompanying the Marines in order to retrieve some vital data from the facility. Based on id Software's legendary first-person shooter, Doom tries its best to look like a game, with dark, angled corridors, ferocious creatures appearing out of nowhere, and a variety of lethal weapons that will, like the aforementioned BFG, warm the cockles of a gamer's heart. There's also one memorable sequence that actually turns the movie into a first-person shooter; the good news is that in the context of the whole film, it's not quite as goofy as it might have been. And that's not a bad frame of reference for the film in general. Considering the game-to-movie field includes such duds as Wing Commander, if you go into Doom with low expectations, you'll probably find it a surprisingly respectable horror/sci-fi thriller in the Resident Evil vein (including its somewhat obligatory subplot of corporate wrongdoing). Also in its favor is that it's unabashedly R-rated, for the extreme gore that is a trademark of the game. After all, the purpose of the movie is to pack scares and thrills into a setting that gamers will quickly recognize. In that sense, it qualifies as a success. --David Horiuchi

... over to the film. Dark dingy corridors, masses of monsters and demons coming at you before a super CGI devil to wrap things up, sure it may have been a bit much, a bit unbelievable but at least it would have been original and true to the nature of the film. I must say that after watching it I feel a bit cheated. Doom had an estimated budget of $70 million which is not a shabby amount of money, it has a recognisable actor in The Rock (I happen to like the Rock). In his previous movies that I have seen I have found him to ...more

Doom was originally a computer game. Quite a famous one. It was pretty basic, with the idea of finding a 'gate' on one of the Mars moons. Many years later the gates open and all hell was let loose on the moon. This is where 'Doomguy' (he doesnt have a real name) come in. He has to take care of all the Demons ,and Zombies that have taken over the moon. Its pretty basic stuff as shooters go. You would think that when making a film out of such a famous game, they would stick to the basic idea. This is not so. With the introduction of a new storyline, the only thing keeping to the game is the name. The monsters featured in the film are similar looking to those in ...

Whose bright idea was it to try and make movies out of computer games? Find them and shoot them for me, will you, because I’ll be arsed if I can think of any good ones. Neither one of the Tomb Raider movies really lived up to the promise. Neither did either of the Resident Evil ones. Alone in the Dark was pants and the list goes on. The latest addition to the ranks comes in the shape of Andrzej Barthowiak’s adaption of the immensely popular horror / shoot ‘em up, Doom. Barthowiak’s track record doesn’t inspire excitement. He previously directed Cradle 2 The Grave (a dodgy Steven Seagal actioner) Exit Wounds (another quite dodgy Steven Seagal actioner) and Romeo Must Die ...
