Dostana(Friendship)-directed by Tarun Mansukhani stars John Abraham,Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra. Released in 2008,this film was one of the highest earners of the year.
Dostana tells the story of Kunal(John) and Sam(Abhishek),who are looking for an apartment in New York. When they finally find a suitable house, the landlord rejects them saying she won't rent it to bachelors as Neha(Priyanka) also lives there.
Sam and kunal pretends to be a gay couple just so that they can rent the apartment. The three of them start bonding and get along really well.As time goes on,both the guys realise they love Neha but find themselves in a funny situation as both need to pretend to be gay. Several other characters are put in the mix and it becomes a hotchpotch of sorts, blending slapstick comedy with commercial trappings. Neha starts falling for her new boss and both Kunal and Sam doesn't like that fact.
Tarun Mansukhani is clear of what he wants to make-an entertaining, typical light hearted comedy. With all the routine songs and dance sequences(the songs are pretty good by the way),this makes for a typical timepass bollywood movie. He has certainly tried to make a statement about homosexuals but i would actually avoid going there because it didn't create any impact on me. It appeared to be a very regular movie which just happens to have characters who pretend to be gay.The ending went over the top and was rather disappointing.
Abhishek and John have a great chemistry on screen and this is one of the only times where John does decent comedy. The movie doesn't demand heroics from the acting department and the performances go with the mood of the film.I pretend not to have seen Boman Irani in the film just because it was one of the worst characters of all time!
Watch it for a few laughs and its light mood.
