Dr. No (Special Edition, DVD) ... ... / DVD released 03 November, 2003 at MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) / Features of the DVD: PAL / Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the US government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying US rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. She gloriously kicks off the long-standing tradition of Bond women who know how to please their favourite secret agent. A sexist anachronism? Maybe, but this is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down. --Jeff ShannonEdition details Inside Dr. No (PG) Terence Young: Bond Vivant Audio commentary featuring director Terence Young and members of the cast and crew 1963 Dr No "featurette" Dr. No gallery of pictures Radio advertising Trailers for Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger Goldfinger and Dr. No TV advertising On the DVD: "He was James Bond," remarks several interviewees of the late Terence Young, the suave, globetrotting, hard-living director who played a major role in defining the look, humour and tailoring of the Bond movies, making the extras on this DVD something of a cinematic festschrift to his talents. Since this was the first film in the franchise, the "making of" featurette goes into some detail about the Ian Fleming novels and how Sean Connery came to be cast, and made-over, by Young. The featurette also has excerpts from one Young's last interviews, spliced together with observations from his daughter, Ursula Andress (Honey Rider) and many of the other actors, production-designer Ken Adam, composer Monty Norman and host of other talents who took part in the making of the film. Many of their quotes are integrated into the commentary track. Also included is an amusing black and white doc from 1963 narrated by a podgy guy with specs who appears to be cousin of Harry Enfield's Mr. Cholmondley-Warner. --Leslie Felperin

... action scenes are great and fun to watch. The special effects look nice and add to the film. However, in places the film is predictable. Also, original Bond fans will be disappointed to see that the original soundtrack from the film has been taken out of this release. The DVD release is great quality. The picture has been remastered and looks fantastic. The sound is also very crisp. There is no background noise. The picture has also been improved since the single disc versions from a couple of years ago. First...more

"Underneath the mango tree". Ursula Andress and Sean Connery may have failed to make the charts with their duet, but they launched a 40+ years legacy of films. The first of 22 films so far. MGM have created the ultimate set of DVDs for this the ultimate legacy. The first and possibly best James Bond films. There are a lot of firsts with Dr No; It's the first time we meet Mr Connery as 007 Lois Maxwell,Jack Lord and Bernard Lee make the first of many outings as Moneypenny, Felix & M. We see Bond in a Tux at the casino for the first time. and Connery uses the "Bond,James Bond" introduction at the casino table ...  Read the complete review

Before the film Dr No, the character James Bond was little more than a fictional super spy known only to a few who had an interest in a series of novels by Ian Fleming. Thanks to a relatively unknown Scottish actor going by the name of Sean Connery a new kind of superhero was born. Not the typical loudly dressed tight wearing superhero that seeming to be saturating the 60's TV network. This was a more suave, debonair tuxedo playboy that we all at sometime wished we could be (well the males amongst us anyway!) For out of no-where this new classy hero burst onto cinema screens and wowed audiences internationally giving a slight insight into what was to become ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dr. No (Special Edition, DVD): Everything but the kitchen sink (1312 words)

‘Dr. No’ is a film released way back in 1963. This, on the whole, does not make for a very promising DVD release, since fewer promotional items were produced back then, and even fewer are likely to have survived to the present day. Thankfully, however, MGM have pulled out all the stops on this occasion, and the Dr. No Special Edition is a marvellously comprehensive archive, a veritable treat for the James Bond fan. When the format is capable of THIS, why are most other DVDs so second-rate? THE FILM The plot begins as James Bond, British super-spy with a licence to kill, is summoned in the middle of the night to Intelligence HQ. ...  Read the complete review

If ever a film needed to be remade it's "Dr.No".This 1962 introduction to the series of movies made by Eon Productions really looks it's age, more shaking than stirring. Of course DVD has given the film a new lease of life, once again the Jamacian locations used for the film look beautiful, vivid colours ,crisp clear photography and undamaged film help shed a few years off the productions age.But this is not really the Bond we know and love, this is a first breath of life,a painful childbirth that grow to establish a winning formula. But more on this later. If you have "Dr.No" on video it will be the special features that ...  Read the complete review

Knowadays everyone knows Bond, the world's more advertised secret agent. This of the first of what I believe is the long series of films ever made - not counting porn ones ... ;) - with 19 official movies. In this movie, James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent to investigate a case in Jamaica, where one of the secret service people, Dr. Strangways, has vanished, in one of the most brilliant murder scenes... the trio of "blind" hitmen. He eventually discovers that Strangways meet his demise at the cold hands of Dr. No, the film's villain, who seems to be beyond rich as he owns his private island. Bond soon pays a visit to Dr. No's island ...  Read the complete review
