... this setting - particularly when we observe Goku as an American high school student - simply does not work. The result is immensely cheesy, and by the time Goku is dropkicking bullies and fawning over his pretty classmate, you'll wonder whether the film was some sort of practical joke between studio heads. That said, the awkwardness does rouse a chuckle or two throughout, and there are a few large nods to fans of the series, memorably as Goku attempts to flatten his hair down with gel, yet it simply springs back...more

Premium Review Dragonball Evolution (DVD): Martial Mayhem. (493 words)

Dragonball? Dragonball makes the transition from cartoon to live action bringing another example of manga to mainstream audiences. Like many transpositions from other mediums such as video games and anime there has been some debate as to whether this is a good idea to start with. I imagine the 'core' Dragonball fans will feel shortchanged with omissions, discrepancies and artistic license. The bones: The story is a familiar one of a boy raised by a mysterious old man, trained in the higher martial arts and forced on the path to fulfill his destiny. There is angst as he is portrayed as an outsider with a seemingly out of reach love ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review What Evolution? (345 words)

When I was kids I love the anime version of this movie, and that was why I was so excited when this movie was released on DVD. I went to the DVD store just to get this DVD and I was so disappointed of what I got. I don't have to hide my feeling, for me this might be one of a failed action fantasy movie. Dragon Ball was one of the great manga series by Akira Toriyama. The story was about a boy who had to get seven balls with the stars inside them. Goku, the boy went with Bulma, the girl he met to start a journey finding the balls. Slightly different from the real story, I think the movie maker wanted to make the movie more familiar by bringing the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dragonball Evolution (DVD): Mangled Manga mess. (498 words)

Dragonball Evolution is based on the Manga comic, so definitely one for the fans. This is a coming of age film, but what happens to Goku (Justin Chatwin) when he reaches 18 is not quite what he'd expected. Goku's adoptive grandfather is a martial arts master who has been training him to fight, although he also gives him strict instructions not to get into fights. For Goku's birthday he gives him a four star dragon ball, one of seven magical balls which, altogether, would give the holder awesome powers. But, being a teenager, the thing most on Goku's mind is that the beautiful Chi Chi (Jamie Chung) has invited him to a party and he just has to get past the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review If this is evolution, I want to de-evolve (936 words)

Note: originally written for my film review website, ShaunMunro.co.uk, thanks! ~~~ Although Dragonball Evolution is only about as competent an adaptation of its source material as Uwe Boll's films are of video games (that is to say, not a lot), at least it is a mercifully brief foray into the road preferably not travelled. Running in at less than 80 minutes (unless you, for who knows what reason, stick around for the credits), it is at least a brisk train wreck, providing you with most of the expository narration you will require within the film's first sixty seconds. Surprisingly free of overly-fantastical verbiage, Dragonball ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dragonball Evolution (DVD): Dragon What!? (267 words)

ok, for all you dragonball z fans out their that have been waiting for many many years hoping that someone would dare create a live action movie for our beloved series, this has to be possibly the worst movie they could have made. The cast i feel is completely wrong, the graphics are nice in places and it does no justice to the dragonball franchise. first of all everything in the film is so small, gokus oozaru form is human size, when in the cartoon hes the size of mountains! shenlong the dragon is tiny compared to the series, piccolo has no antenna and the battles are abit to close for my liking. its true it has some amazing visuals, but for people not ...  Read the complete review
