Advantages: based on a very popular manga series Dragon Ball
Disadvantages: boring, not funny, not exciting at all
When I was kids I love the anime version of this movie, and that was why I was so excited when this movie was released on DVD. I went to the DVD store just to get this DVD and I was so disappointed of what I got.
I don't have to hide my feeling, for me this might be one of a failed action fantasy movie.
Dragon Ball was one of the great manga series by Akira Toriyama. The story was about a boy who had to get seven balls with the stars inside them. Goku, the boy went with Bulma, the girl he met to start a journey finding the balls.
Slightly different from the real story, I think the movie maker wanted to make the movie more familiar by bringing the characters to the more modern situation. Which actually okay for me as long as they have better execution than this.
I believe that Stephen Chow, the director (or producer) of this movie wanted to make this movie funny, just like what he always does to his works. But too bad, instead of being funny, it wasn't able to make me laugh like what he wanted.
Supported with big stars like Chow Yun Fat didn't help at all. Even his performance in this movie was a career suicide according to me, because it was not only annoying but also unimpressive at all. Nothing was actually memorable from this movie which was too bad because the public excitement was really big the first time this movie was released.
I am so glad that I didn't end up sleeping and turn the movie off. Because it was really boring after the first half an hour. If you're really curious, you can just rent this DVD, but if you are a movie lover, you can just skip. Unless you're a manga freak and you wanted to make a collection of Dragon Ball series, you can buy this, or if you're okay with secondhand stuff, you can buy mine.
Summary: watch only if you don't have anything to watch
