Advantages: Likeable lead characters with lots of fun and mayhem
Disadvantages: non
This film is classic Owen Wilson at this best. I think that he plays a Walter Mitty type character very well. For those of you too young to remember Walter Mitty, this was a character played by Danny Kaye, a loveable loser who invented stories about himself to make him more attractive and interesting. This is exactly the type of character that Drillbit Taylor is, although perhaps a bit more seedy.
The film is about 3 young nerds who attract the attention of the school bully (who is also a bit of a psychopath). The bully gets so bad that they decide to hire protection and interview a few for the job. The select Drillbit as the likely candidate, mainley because he appears to be the sanest applicant and he is also cheap. Drillbits real plan is to string them along and perhaps steal or con a few things out of them. Despite himself he gets hooked and does actually start helping them. He ends up pretending to be a supply teacher and being quite good at it. The worrying thing is how easily he manages to walk into the school and pretend, no one asks him for proof. Inevitably they find out his lies, just has his no good friends are robbing them.
This film is great for kids and adults. It will bring back memories of being bullied at school and make you wish that you had your own Drillbit back then. Yes the plot is not new, but the 3 actors playing the nerds are very cute and very good actors and Owen Wilson turns in his usual hilariously brilliant performance. Also I think that hiring their own protection is a slightly new angle to this type of school rights of passage movie.
The guy who plays the bully really is scary and gives the right freaky psycopathic manic turn. The way he turns into a little angel when parents and teachers are around is so transparent you wonder how they don't see it, especially when he gives the poor kids the evil eye disguised as winks. For me one of the funniet moments is when two of the you kids (the fat boy and the tall nerd) train to fight the bully and test each other with different levels of painfully punches.
I am a real Owen Wilson fan and I was not disappointed by this film and think that it is good family entertainment.
Summary: 3 school nerds call in Drillbit to deal with the psycho bully boy.
