And the strange punk band and all the hangers-on look like they're high all the time - they probably were, along with everyone involved in making the film. At least the music isn't too bad - kind of a mixture of The Sex Pistols and the Kings of Leon - nevertheless, the constant flashes between the story and the band playing are annoying and really not that necessary. No-one is going to pick this film up by accident - it has 'ha...more

Crowned Review Driller Killer (DVD): Driller Killer Thriller? (1002 words)
by - written on 13/07/09 (Very useful, 105 readings)
Rating:

Reno is an impoverished artist, living with girlfriend Carol and another friend, and struggling to make ends meet. A general feeling of disappointment towards life and punk band neighbours who are constantly practicing slowly begins to drive Reno mad. The only thing that seems to keep him vaguely sane is murder; the grotesque killing of homeless men with an electric drill. Will his friends notice that there is something wrong with him before his killing gets even more out of hand? Or will the fact that he choses the down and out mean that he can get away with his crimes? The director of this film, Abel Ferrara, also plays the lead part of Reno (although under ...  Read the complete review

We have all heard of the term 'video nasty'. But not everyone knows what it really means. You see, before 1984 there was no real limit to what could be released on video, apart from erotic portions of film that were seen to be obscene. It was the original release of Cannibal Holocaust, and Driller killer that caused the need for a law to be passed. The creators of the films wrote to Mary whitehouse, who was on the National viewers and listeners Assosiation to complain about the content of their own films. They saw it as a kind of free advertising, and did so to help boost sales. Mary Whitehouse started a campaign against such films, labelling them as video ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Driller Killer (DVD): The terrifying vision of one man's descent into madness. ... (751 words)

Rating:

Driller Killer is one of the most notorious video nasties ever. Released in 1979, this film is one of those responsible for the video recordings act introduced in 1984. It come from the mind of the now critically acclaimed director Abel Ferrara, and was banned for close to 20 years after its release. This was mostly due to the marketing of the distributors though – this film is graphically violent though, so don’t get me wrong!! I will start by warning you, this film really is violent and gruesome – but if you can handle that and see beyond the shock-horror values then you can gain quite a lot from it. Driller Killer is less a horror film, and ...  Read the complete review

Driller Killer was labelled as being a so-called 'Video Nasty' when it was submitted for release in the UK and subsequently banned from general release. 20 years later though it was released from its exiled status and is now available on general release all over the place. However, do you really want to purchase a 20 year old punk/art-house movie, which was filmed on a shoe-string and features a man running around murdering people with a power tool? well read on and find out... Directed by the now hugely respected Abel Ferrara on an extremely low budget, Driller Killer focuses its attention on the slow decay of the mind of a young man named ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Driller Killer (DVD): Driller Thriller!!! (142 words)
by - written on 22/10/00 (Very useful, 31 readings)
Rating:

A hole in the head for mainstream cinema! This film stands up as a classic of independent gutsy horror, and began the carrear of it's infamously controvercial madman director Abel Ferrara. Ferrara combines perfectly the seedy realism of early Martin Scorsesse, gory horror, and the punk rock attitude of the late 70's. This is a film that does not care about cinematic convention, it just plugs in and starts drilling! We follow our anti-hero (a fustrated artist) around the city as he lets his tension loose on everyone he can. It has been labeled as one of the original 'Video Nasties', yet it really does stand above many of the trashy horrors that came out in ...  Read the complete review
