I watched this film last night, I missed the first ten minutes too, so sorry if I miss anything, however the plot is quite straight forward so I hope I mention everything!
This film was released in 1999 and I've never really heard anyone talk about it, so I thought I'd catch a glimpse of it and see what I thought, I've also now read some opinions on both dooyoo and ciao and I have to say that unlike some people on these sites, I didn't really like this film, it was ok at times and sometimes hilariously funny but the plot itself was pretty boring, I'm glad I missed 10 minutes of it!
The film is directed by Michael Patrick Jann, I only know one other film that he has directed which was Aisle Six ~ In which I have never watched! (sorry!) The film lasts for just over an hour and a half.
The film is set in mount Rose, Minnesota. Here the local beauty pageant is going to take place. Gladys Leeman, former Mount Rose American Teen Princess, is leading the pageant this year and is desperate for her daughter, Becky to follow in her footsteps by winning. Gladys Leeman is quite full of herself and is married to the richest man in town.
Then a rather unexpected tradgedy strikes when the fave to win the pageant, Tammy Curry dies ~ She dies in a rather unexplained tractor accident, strange!?
Then comes the main star of the performance, Amber Atkins, the perfect contestant to win. She has a great personalitly and is very pretty. She is witty and courageous and is trying to raise herself beyond her trailer trash, but loving and caring mother who also won the pageant.
Then comes all the other unexpected accidents, after Amber swaps numbers with a friend so she can perform first, this girl performs and gets hit on the head and sent to hospital, Amber realises that it was no accident and that the heavy object was meant to hit herself in the head! Then Ambers trailor/caravan house burns down. (Suspected arson) Her
mother is injured and rushed to hospital.
Here is where Amber decides to quit before anything else happens, having already recieved many death threats in her locker. This part of the movie is quite freaky but by far the most interesting part, if your actually awake when it gets to this part that is!!!
Her mother who seems alright, just a bit burnt with a can bear fused into her hand, convinces her daughter to go through with the pageant because she skows that she can win.
The show isn't all about Amber thuogh, after Tammy died, Gladys' daughter, Becky took her role as the fave to win. She makes a strong appearance throughout the whole movie, the practising and rehearsing. There are also many other pageant beauty queen entries too though.
One is a young girl that can work with deaf children, she uses this talent for her performance. Another is a dog lover who will show in her performance how much she loves German Shepherds! Another is a cheerleader, imagine her performance!! There is also an Asian-American entry, she doesen't have a clue! Lastly there is the true actor who beleives this is her first step in the right direction.
We also meet last year's beauty pageant winner who is now in hospital suffering from bad annorexia, she makes the film a little funnier at this point, especially when her hair starts falling out, although this shouldn't really be funny!
Thats all the main contestants and people that we get to meet, there are also the judges though, all have never judged anything or anyone in there lives though! One is a young but BIG man who is easily attracted to young women, another is an older man without a clue and who is always smoking, there is also another BIG man and last but not least a young and tiny, mousey like female who I don't think said anything at all!
The story carries on with the annoying countdown to the show and the big, who will win question. Parts of
the movie before the pageant are funny, the scary threats were surely the best part but otherwise there is nothing special, quite a bore to watch really.
Then comes the day of the pageant, you see what goes well and what goes wrong, some parts are hilarious and others are pathetic. I'm not spilling the beans to who wins and what happens but in the space of about half an hour the whole pageant is over and done with and then we're onto the state finals and then the national finals in this short space of time. Everything goes really quickly, the whole film has been building up to the pageant climax and it goes so quickly it's pretty stupid.
Apart from thinking this was a pretty abismal film, I thought the actors were brilliant, with many recognisable faces, I enjoyed their performances.

The whole movie is recorded by a crew which is very different to other movies I have seen. They are a school crew that are making a film on the pageant, obviously this is a very clever and appealing way to make the film, this is 1 advantage of the film for me! ~ However this does also get annoying!!!
The DVD extras include the usual, a trailor of the flik, interviews and behind the scene parts as well as the deleted scenes section. The quality is also SO much better than the film on VHS, I am led to believe. The extras features were great and although I skipped some of the interviews, most of the stuff was great, maybe even better than the film itself! ~ Or is that me just being harsh!!! The extras are avialable in English audio (5:1) alike most DVD's nowadays.
