Advantages: Full of cheap jokes, quite fast-moving.
Disadvantages: Terrible storyline!
Containing a cast of what will no doubt be the trashy movie stars of the next few years, this movie is designed to appeal to the same audiences who loved ‘American Pie’ and ‘Dumb and Dumber’. The cheap jokes come as thick and fast, and the general motivations of all the characters are similar. The action begins when two housemates awake after what has obviously been a good night; so good, in fact, that they have forgottten everything that happened. Watch in horror as a man enters the room, urinates in a pot plant and leaves, without anyone even reacting. This sets the tone for the movie: bizarre occurrences in a bizarre situation. The boys are desperate to find out where one of their cars has gone (as the title suggests), and their voyage takes them around the city, meeting more and more attractive, scantily-clad women. The humour is not fantastically planned, although there are several catchphrases which will sweep Britain as quickly as the movie itself. One of the most notable of these is from a situation in which the two mates have got tattoes on their backs, one saying ‘Dude!’ and the other ‘Sweet!’ and a conversation ensues as follows: ‘“Dude! What does mine say?”, “Sweet! What does mine say?”, “Dude! What does...”’ and so on. This may seem a tedious play on words, but to view on screen is actually very funny. Another situation sees the drive-thru Chinese take away voice box lady who keeps saying ‘and den?’, even after an order has been taken. This eventually leads to the box being destroyed by an annoyed customer! The Chinese takeaway fits into the mould of cheap digs at non-Americans. Heaven forbid these jokes being seen as xenophobic, but you must see the funny side of having characters called ‘Gay-looking Scandinavian dudes’ or you will take offence. Bear in mind this is a movie market aimed strictly at North
America, which is why they received the movie three months before the U.K. There is the usual sprinkling of fine-looking women you would expect in a movie of this calibre, with “We are hot chicks” being the most notable group. The use of such characters is indeed trashy, yet it fits well with the general theme of the movie. The directors know this is sexism, but will get away with it since it is in the context of a joke. For a deliberately trashy movie, the construction of the plot is surprisingly good. Don’t get me wrong, the storyline itself is terrible, a C-Movie if ever you saw one. Yet the way the events fit together is incredibly well done. An intricate plot of strippers and fast cars presents itself to our “heroes”, and the twists and surprises emerge at the appropriate time. The film’s finale is an appropriate climax to the whole ridiculous affair, suffice to say it is of a similar theme to the rest of the movie. This film will appeal to anyone who found ‘American Pie’ and ‘Dumb and Dumber’ enjoyable, whether it was for the cheap jokes, bikini-clad women, or just the sheer mind-numbeningness of the storyline. Be warned, if your tastes are geared towards intellectual stimulation, stay at home or watch something else. However, if you fancy a trashy movie full of jokes you and your friends can repeat at work when you’re bored, go and see it. You won’t be disappointed.
