Dumbo (DVD) ... April, 2005 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, Dubbed, Full Screen, PAL / A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton

Crowned Review Dumbo (DVD): An Extra Special Delivery (1341 words)

As I was organising my Disney DVDs the other day, I re-discovered a classic that had been hidden from a very obsessed little boy (who's on the autistic spectrum and would watch it 4 or 5 times in a row). That classic was Dumbo, a relatively short film that I count as one of the best Disney animations. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view), the little boy saw the film in my hand, and demanded that we put "Bumbo" on for about the thousandth time. So I thought it was as good a time as any for me to share my thoughts on this classic animation with you….. ---All About The Film--- Dumbo was the 4th Disney animated ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A very touching film (538 words)

Yesterday as it was raining outside I decided to let my elder son watch a film. I knew that Dumbo is a classic of Walt Disney and that it is a film about an elephant, but this was all. I haven't seen the film until yesterday afternoon. My 28 months old son started to watch it sitting in his highchair while I was sitting next to him feeding the younger one. To be honest I was curious as well. The film starts with a rainy evening plot, just the same as we had yesterday afternoon. Some animals of the circus got their babies wrapped like a gift delivered by storks. Only Mrs. Jumbo remained without her baby she was expected so desperately. Finally her ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dumbo (DVD): BigEars isnt only in Noddy! (353 words)

I love Disney films, and my favourites have always usually included animals of some sort as the main characters. One I quite like is no exception, and this film is Dumbo! Plot: Dumbo is the story of an elephant who is born with huge ears, way larger than any of the other elephants in the herd! He is constantly being made fun of so he 'runs away', or flies off to join the circus. But he is missed more than he thought he would have been- can they find Dumbo before they move on? Characters: My favourite character is most certainly Dumbo. He is so adorable, you cannot stop yourself from being won over by his cheeky little smile and adorable ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Dumbo - being different isn't a bad thing (425 words)

I recently watched this film for the first time since I was a really young child and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to say that the one thing that truly amazed me was the quality of the animation and the film as a whole. The film is almost 70 years old yet it still holds a huge amount of charm and the pictures are truly amazing. The film begins with all the animals in the zoo getting deliveries from the stork with their babies. However Mrs Jumbo, one of the elephants, does not get a delivery. Later the animals from teh zoo are packed up on to a train and taken to a town further away. On the way the stork arrives with Mrs Jumbos package. As she ...  Read the complete review

Okay, being a budgeting sort of person, I have been adding the odd toy and DVD and such to my Amazon orders, to hide in the loft for Christmas. First though, I always watch the DVDs with the kids safely asleep, to make sure the disc is not blank (happened once), or otherwise defective (has happened twice). The faults were not down to just Disney, as only one of my previously faulty discs was a Disney, the others were Sony Wonder and paramount releases; its just that these things happen! Anyway, having had mishaps before, I check them, and then place them in the loft in the appropriate recetacle.Yes, even my loft is tidy and organised more or less, but that's another ...  Read the complete review
