Advantages: Jam, God, Jam

Disadvantages: er, um, yeah

Here’s 4 facts that most people know about Eddie Izzard:
a) He’s TV (a transvestite)
b) He says “er….um…..yeah” a lot
c) He never does TV (television)
d) He talks about jam.

Here’s 4 facts that only people who’ve seen him live or have seen one of his videos know about Eddie Izzard:
a) His shows, although fairly surreal, are also very socially and politically aware.
b) He comes over as an incredibly intelligent and charming man.
c) He’s far, far funnier than you’d imagine
d) And, er… um… yeah … and …. he does talk about jam a lot.

This video was recorded in San Francisco in 1998, and is the best of his four videos (the others being Unrepeatable [1994], Definite Article [1996], Glorious [1997])

The 2 hour long show is seamless, he moves from subject to subject without you noticing. And those subjects are not those for ordinary comedians to use, he traverses from British Empiricism, US gun laws, Christianity, Scooby Doo, Kennedy & the Space Race and the European Union. These are all important issues (perhaps not Scooby), but he talks about them all up-frontly and his views are always intelligent and well thought through. But, obviously it’s the comedy he extracts from these subject matters that makes this performance so good.

During much of the show, he spends it talking to himself, leaping back and forth from character to character – God talking to Jesus Christ, J.F.Kennedy talking to the people of Berlin and Neil Armstong to Buzz Aldrin. It’s all the facial expressions and arm movements that makes it even more hysterical.

And then there’s his impressions. He does James Mason as God, Sean Connery as Henry VIII and Michael Caine as Christ. All very funny, especially a Scot setting up the Church of England.

And there’s his miming. He runs around the stage as a monste
r, as a transvestite parachutist and as himself when he was a boy chatting up a girl by saying he’s got legs, hitting her with a French loaf and running away.

And there’s his French. He spends at least 15 minutes just speaking French. He actually does whole shows in French (in France if you were wondering where). He does his famous “Le singe est sur le branche” sketch, which won him his Edinburgh Fringe Perrier Award many years ago. It revolves around the fact that the first three French phrases Eddie learnt at school were “le chat est sur la chaise” (the cat is on the chair), “la souris est sous la table” (the mouse is under the table) and “le singe est sur le branche” (the monkey is on the branch), and that the only way he could fit them into conversation was to go to France with a cat, mouse, monkey, table and chair, and hang around heavily wooded areas until someone came along. It’s a classic!

This is the best video release from the funniest man in Britain (and probably the world). Please believe me!
