Eddie Izzard - Glorious (DVD)

Eddie Izzard - Glorious (DVD) ... released 04 October, 2004 at Universal Pictures UK / Features of the DVD: PAL / In Glorious, Eddie Izzard's stand-up routine takes a little bit of Robin Williams, a little bit of Jerry Seinfeld, even a little bit of Bob Newhart, but the final mix is absolutely his own and dizzily funny. It's not so much the subjects of his humour--though not many comics make jokes about classical mythology or evil giraffes--as it is the way he fluidly skips from thing to thing in a madcap free-associative whirl. He lulls you by seeming casual and almost sloppy, but when he needs to be precise his gestures and mimicry are razor sharp. There have been a million tired jokes made about trying to get a shower to stay at the right temperature, but Izzard manages to make even that funny. He's even funnier when he's imitating Sean Connery as Noah, trying to convince God that a speedboat would make a much better photo opportunity than an ark, or playing a beekeeper flirting with someone passing on the street. Much of the giddiness comes from his astounding sense of spontaneity. Half the show seems to have been made up on the spot, and if it wasn't, your mind boggles wondering how he could have possibly written something so ridiculous and yet appropriate. Though he uses a number of four-letter words, his humour is surprisingly clean, and even the most frank vulgarities seems like a bit of impish innocence coming out his mouth. Glorious indeed. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

... comedy show, but rest assured that Izzard turns these subjects into a hilarious hour long show! Izzards style is what you'd descirbe as 'Marmite' (i.e you love it or hate it), he uses a lot of mime, refers alot to cinema, relies on you knowing a little about his subjects in the first place and you need to have a good imagination to get the most from his miming sections. If you like your comedy to be obvious, as in has to have an obvious punchline, then you may not get on with Izzards style, but if you like comedy wi...more

Glorious was the first Eddie Izzard show I ever watched. It was shown on Channel 4 a long time ago and I found it immensely funny. I have recently bought the box set of Eddies Videos but this one still remains my favourite, shining out in comparison with all of the others. Glorious was released on video in 1997. This show tells a story of religion, including sketches about Noah and his Ark, the creation of the world, and many other immensely funny tales based on the stories in the bible. For those who have not come across Eddie and his humour before, I will try and give you a taste, as best I can; but before I do this I would like to share with you a little ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 'So, yeah!' (873 words)

Eddie Izzard is a stand-up comical genius in my book, and I own all his DVD's and have been to see his show once in Newcastle a few years back. I don't think there is anyone who could perform a stand-up routine quite the way he does and I find him side-splittingly funny. His comedy style has been described as 'rambling, whimsical monologue and self-referential pantomime'. Born in 1962 in Yemen, Eddie's family moved to Northern Ireland shortly afterwards, and remained there until Eddie was 5, before moving to England. Eddie's mother died from cancer when he was only 6 years old, and he states his desperation for affection following this is how he ended up ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Eddie Izzard - Glorious (DVD): Original and clever stand-up comedy. (274 words)

This is Eddie Izzard at his funniest, before he went all Hollywood and started appearing in films that aren't very good and getting too big for his high heels (if you haven't experienced Izzard before, he is a cross dressing comedian!). In Glorious, Eddie Izzard discusses many topics but mainly focuses on religion and inparticular early christianity and history, now this may sound like the worst topic ever for a comedy show, but rest assured that Izzard turns these subjects into a hilarious hour long show! 'I like my like my women like I like my coffee... In a plastic cup...' James Mason and Sean Connery are two of the big 'stars' that pop up in cameos in this DVD. Of course if you know your Izzard then you'll know these are just two of his many impressions that he does on stage. In this DVD the James Mason impression plays God while Sean plays Noah, in the 'etch-a-sketch end of the world' that was the flood; followed later by Jesus preaching to the dinosaurs. Eddie is one of the best comedians around and in this DVD he really shows off all his comic talents. Whether you love his jokes or if you find his faces funny when he's becoming an ...  Read the complete review

In Glorious Izzard manages to blend comedy about the big things in life - creation, the bible, with some of the minutest details. The comedy is grand and surreal and minutely observational at the same time. This is Eddie Izzard at his peak. He covers the bible - people with long beards, blending them in with Sean Connery, Speedboats, James Mason and baboons fighting each other. He talks about showers and toasters and the inability to ever find the right settings (toast is either not cooked or burnt, showers are either freezing or scalding) He talks about the Robin Hood legend, and the nottingham twang that always turns into an american ...  Read the complete review
