Advantages: Brilliant acting
Disadvantages: none
I watched Educating Rita for the fourth time last night, it is a lovely film to curl up and relax with. A comedy drama that really keeps you gritted to the screen.
Written by Willy Russell and directed by Lewis Gilbert this moving film was released in 1983 and runs for 110 minutes.
Main Cast;
Dr Frank Bryant ............... Michael Caine.
Rita also known as Susan ......Julie Walters
Brian .........Michael Williams
Trish.......Maureen Lipmon
Julia........Jeananne Crowley
Denny.....Malcolm Douglas
About the film;
Rita a young bored house wife married to Denny decides to join open university to broaden her horizons, she is desperate to learn and like a bombshell arrives at Frank Bryant's study for her first lesson, he on the other hand is a tutor who's wife has left him, his girl friend Julia is carrying on with fellow tutor Brian and so he would much prefer to drink Jack Daniels than teach Rita.
Rita is having none of this and her infectious character gets to Frank he becomes quite close to her and is amazed at how she can take everything in and digest it. He grows to love her infectious character and then sadly as Rita starts to change into a serious student the type that he loathes to teach he turns to the bottle again.
Rita herself battles to keep her marriage going to Denny, he so wants kids and she hides her contraception pills under the floor boards until he finds them one day when he is attempting to knock through from their living room to the dining room.
A very moving part of the film is when Denny burns all of Rita's books and this is the turning point of their marriage.
Rita goes on to transforming into a modern student she makes loads of new friends, changes her name to Susan and moves into a flat with Trish.
Another amusing part of the film is when she first knocks on Trish's door and she answers in a flowing robe and bandana with classical music playing full blast, all she says is;
'Wouldn't you just die without Mahler!'
I thought this was a brilliant entrance for Maureen Lipmon.
Frank eventually decides to move to Australia but not before Rita gets her results, a tear jerking lovely end to the film takes place at the airport so if you haven't watched this film
go and buy a copy from Amazon for 4.98 with some of your miles, you will thoroughly enjoy it.
Summary: Some very funny moments along with a few tear jerking scenes
