Julie Walters plays Susan, a hairdresser who thinks there is more to life than standing perming hair all day and sitting in the pub with her dreary husband and family all night. She starts to call herself Rita and seeks out an education for herself...

Enter Michael Caine, a heavy drinking University professor, who see's the potential in Rita and encourages her, in her persuit of educating herself.

The two lead actor's work beautifully together, Caine's laid-back man of the world, who has seen it all, done it all and is now happy to sit back and drink the rest of his life away. Walter's up beat, up tempo Rita is the perfect foil for him.

We see Rita graduate through several hair styles, changes of fashion sense, and as she changes we see her hard work and dedication start to give her more confidence and increase her awareness of her self-worth.

A feel good movie, it's funny, poignant, and great entertainment.
