Advantages: Lovely film
Disadvantages: none
Julie Walters plays the part of Susan, a hairdresser from a working class background with an ambition to do more than just have babies. In an effort to educate herself she joins the Open University and, with a mostly inebriated Michael Caine as her tutor she develops into an intellectual being. She realises there is much more to life than she could have imagined and her marriage breaks up. To see Susan blossom is really nice and the relationship she develops with her tutor is quite endearing to see. However, I have seen the same happen to some mature students as happened to Susan. I have seen women who, in less than a year of education, have split up with their husbands because, like Rita's husband, they couldn't understand why there was a need to learn any more than how to wash dishes, use the washing machine and how to iron clothes. I love this film and, now I have it on DVD watch it when I just want something 'nice' on. A must.
