Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is a guide at an Antarctic research base who is coaxed by Dr. Davis McClaren (Bruce Greenwood) to take him to a remote part of Antarctica in search of a rare piece of meteorite that supposedly crashed there from Mercury. He is nervous but his worries are somewhat allayed by the promise that he'll get a financial benefit out of it, and as the only way there is via dog sled, they begin on their journey. However...more

Premium Review Eight Below (DVD): Fun Disney film (303 words)

Rating:

Disney are of course best known for their animated fare, with classics such as Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, but occasionally they do venture out into live action are, with outings such as 101 Dalmations (starring Glenn Close) and now, Eight Below. Although Disney have been very hit and miss in recent years, relying on direct to DVD cash-in sequels of the likes of the aforementioned classics, they have here unearthed a gem of a story that's tailor-made for animal lovers and those who simply enjoy a rousing adventure. Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is a guide at an Antarctic research base who is coaxed by Dr. Davis McClaren (Bruce Greenwood) to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Great family film - Tissues at the ready (680 words)

My daughter bought this DVD on Monday for £1 from a car boot sale and as it's the school holidays we decided to get a very tired 2 year old in bed early and have a 'movie night' with the elder two - aged 10 and 12, all snuggled up on the sofa with the curtains closed, lights off and lots of goodies to munch on. We usually do this one weekend night a week and have really run out of films that we can watch and all actually enjoy, its got to the stage where all that's left are PG rated daft girly comedies, which me and my partner yawn through while silently willing the timer on the DVD player to hurry up and reach ' 0 minutes remaining'. THE STORY - The film is ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Eight Below (DVD): Eight Below - a Diverting Couple of Hours (829 words)

Rating:

Eight Below is a Disney action film, released in 2006, which tells the story of a group of huskies who are left to fend for themselves through the harsh Antarctic winter and their handler who is fighting to be able to return to collect them. It is 'inspired' by a true story and is a remake of a Japanese film. I first went to see this at the cinema with my eldest and we got the DVD at Christmas. It got mixed reviews at the time, but it's very popular in our house. The first almost half of the film introduces us to the huskies and their handler, Jerry, as they take a visiting scientist on a hazardous journey to find evidence of a rare meteorite. The trip ...  Read the complete review

I received this movie a few weeks back, but kept putting off actually watching it - it just didn't grab my interest. A dog movie - ANOTHER dog movie... but hey ho, much to my surprise, this was one doggy movie that did more than just make me cry (let's face it, dog movies ALWAYS make people cry)... this movie actually made me soooooo angry I wanted to rush off and find the real life owner of those dogs so I could smack him! Everyone by now knows what the story is about, but just in case... it's about a team of dogs used to ferry about scientists in the Antarctic. This movie is actually informative, I learned a few things from watching the movie that I hadn't ...  Read the complete review
