El Mariachi/Desperado In my eyes the real Hollywood stars of the Silver Screen are the directors. I’d sooner see a film directed by David Fincher starring unknowns than see a film with Brad Pitt directed by ‘some guy’. But that’s just me, I love every aspect of the movie making process and the director has the ultimate job in controlling every single element of a film. Robert Rodriguez is a director I have a lot of time and respect for. Robert Rodriguez is a fully operational film unit in himself. Most directors just sit and direct, some also write. Rodriguez writes, directs, edits, occasionally provides musical score and on his last film Spy Kids he even branched into special effects. This dvd is a showcase of his first two feature films that got him noticed and on the way to $100 million plus box office grosses. First up is El Mariachi. This was intended to be made for the spanish video market alone and Rodriguez bankrolled the $7000 production budget by submitting himself for medical tests. Set in dusty Mexico, El Mariachi and Desperado follow the violent exploits of a guitar player who accidentally finds himself doing battle with the local drug lord. While El Mariachi covers this transition, Desperado picks up afterwards and tells the story of the musician returning to the town for revenge after his girlfriend’s death at the end of the first film. Taking Desperado, the bigger budget (although actually only $7million) brother, first; director Robert Rodriguez gives us a fast-cutting action-adventure film.
