 ... little boy riding pillion on his horse. Wonderful moments include the showdown scene involving a balloon, and the bandits forcing monks into sexual servitude. This is great stuff, and still holds up very well. The second part of the film certainly ramps up the weirdness. The four master gunfighters are progressively weirder. The highlight might well be the composite gunman formed of a man with no legs strapped to the back of a man with no arms, but I’m also very fond of the wizened old fellow who can catch bullets ...more

(This is a review of just the film, although – finally! – there’s a Jodorowsky box set coming out on DVD very soon.) This is a legendary cult film. Made in 1971 in Mexico by uber-weirdo Alejandro Jodorowsky, it was unavailable for years because of a vicious argument between the director and the film’s distributor (former Beatles manager Allen Klein). The BBC showed it about ten years ago, but now it’s been fully restored (along with its equally loopy companion piece, the Holy Mountain) and is available once again.
