End Of Days (DVD) ... Byrne ... / DVD released 01 August, 2005 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL / After a two-year hiatus that included recovery from heart surgery, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the big screen at the end of 1999 with End of Days, a Christmas turkey if ever there was one. Overcooked and bloated with stuffing, this ludicrous thriller attached itself to the end-of-the-millennium furore. The prologue begins in 1979 with panic in the Vatican when a comet signals the birth of a child who will, 20 years later, become the chosen bride of Satan, destined to conceive the devil's spawn between 11 p.m. and midnight on December 31, 1999. It's hard to decide who has the more thankless role--Robin Tunney as Satan's would-be bride, or Schwarzenegger as Jericho Cane, the burned-out alcoholic bodyguard assigned to protect the girl from Satan, billed as "The Man" and played with cheesy menace (and an inconsistent variety of metaphysical manifestations) by Gabriel Byrne. With kitsch character names like Jericho and Chicago (Arnie's partner, played by Kevin Pollack) and lapses in logic that any five-year-old could spot, End of Days is a loud, aggravating movie that would be entertaining if it were intended as comedy. But Schwarzenegger and director Peter Hyams approach the story as an earnest tale of redemption and tested faith, delivering a ridiculous climax full of special effects and devoid of dramatic impact. You're left instead to savour the verbal and physical sparring between Satan and Jericho, resulting in the most thorough pummelling Schwarzenegger's ever endured on screen. Of course he eventually gets his payback, just in time for New Year's Eve. Perhaps he was touched by an angel? --Jeff Shannon

... as it goes. Sound hokey? Well it is and the movie as a result has some pretty silly plot points throughout, on display most glaringly perhaps in the all powerful devil's illogical sparing of Arnie throughout the picture and Arnie's character's cliche "my wife and kid died so I stopped believing in God" melacholy. However, the silly plot aside this movie excells in all areas. Despite his accent Arnie's performance isn't that bad and Gabriel Byrne delivers an absolutely delicious turn as Lucifer incarnate. ...more

Basic story of the film is: Its December 1999, people are ready to celebrate with style into the new Millenium, however the Devil has better plans. He hopes to bring the end of the world, by coming to earth taking on a mans form the form of Gabriel Byrne. If he imprgnates a 20-year old women (Robin Tunney) between 11pm and midnight the world will come to an end. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who plays an atheist cop, is the only hope in saving the world! The film is dramatic through out and left me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails. Its not particulary scary but it does have some phsycollogically disturbing moments! The music definately was chosen ...  Read the complete review

I am blessed at the moment with several things in life, the most important of these being my addiction to Sky Movies (which I shall shortly be seeking counselling for at this rate!). Until that time however arrives I shall enjoy the delights of 15 movie channels and films like the following, END OF DAYS. Having seen this film before, but missed half of it due to somebody inherently whittering down my earhole! This time however I was not to be perturbed! ~~CAST~~ Jericho Cane – Arnold Schwarzenegger Satan – Gabriel Byrne Christine York – Robin Tunney Chicago – Kevin Pollack DIRECTOR – Peter ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Who were you cavorting with on Millennium Eve? (700 words)

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Jericho, who in a lot of ways is like Mel Gibson’s character in Lethal Weapon, just much less humorous. He used to be a policeman, but after the brutal deaths of his wife and daughter because he testified in a high profile court case, he quit the job, and became a bodyguard/secret security agent of sorts. The film focuses on the last 4 days of 1999, and you see Jericho as a broken man, who drinks too much, and teeters on the brink of suicide. The last day of any millennium is said to be the time that Satan returns to the earth to conceive a child with the woman of his choice in the last hour of the night, and this creates such ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review End Of Days (DVD): End Of Days - Silly fun. (493 words)

Directed By - Peter Hyams Starring - Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Pollak, Robin Tunney Length - 118 minutes Satan is coming to town! We're all gonna die! End Of Days tries to cash in on the millennium by setting itself just before the year 2000. The story is as silly as it gets with 'The Devil' (played by Byrne) resurfacing in New York City after a thousand years. Though he is only here for a short time, as after the clock strikes twelve for the New Year then he goes back to hell. The only way he can stay upon the Earth and make the world his own is to find the girl bearing the mark of the Antichrist, and being ...  Read the complete review
