Advantages: Gabriel Byrne as a wonderfully evil Devil
Disadvantages: Hokey script
Despite his poor acting I have always been a fan of Arnie and this movie is no exception.
The plot, if you can call it that, involves the return of Satan, in the form of the wonderful Gabriel Byrne, who needs to impregnate a chosen innocent in order to create an anti-christ and replace God as supreme being...all before the millenium.....and that's as deep as it goes. Sound hokey? Well it is and the movie as a result has some pretty silly plot points throughout, on display most glaringly perhaps in the all powerful devil's illogical sparing of Arnie throughout the picture and Arnie's character's cliche "my wife and kid died so I stopped believing in God" melacholy.
However, the silly plot aside this movie excells in all areas. Despite his accent Arnie's performance isn't that bad and Gabriel Byrne delivers an absolutely delicious turn as Lucifer incarnate. Add that to stunning special effects (by 1999 standards anyhow), wonderful sets, able director from Peter Hyams, a great soundtrack, fantasic cinematography, great aditing and good pace and in actual fact you have a thoroughly enjoyable flick that, in my opinion, is more enjoyable than Ron Howard's Da Vinci Code adaption.
Recommended
Summary: If you don't expect a thinker's movie then this one is well worth it.
