 ... respect, director Jeannot Szwarc needed only to rely mainly on Michael Barak's novel upon which this film is based. There is an element of romance, corruption and double-crossing, and I have to admit that I was very impressed with the script and the general plot itself. The suspense and tension are handled very well by Swzarc, right from the off, as we follow Holbeck for a couple of scenes, with one particularly suspenseful scene as he enters his house and immediately thinks something is up. During World War 2, the Allies were desperate to get their hands on the code that the Nazis used to communicate with each other: Enigma. Since then, the name has been used to describe many a code. The end of the War saw the start of the Cold War, and a period of detente, where the US and the USSR were at a military and political standoff until Gorbachev and Reagan managed to bring this to an end in 1989/1990. However, the Cold War was an extremely tense and political period of tense mistrust, with each side trying various tactics to gain an insight into the other's intentions and progress.
