Advantages: Good Performances, Quite Good Storyline, Thrilling
Disadvantages: Unrealistic
I’m a really big Jennifer Lopez fan so I was anticipating the release of enough for quite some time. I’d heard it was one of those independent women type movies and was quite looking forward to seeing what it would be like. I saw a trailer of this movie quite early on. Quite a while back before it was released in the cinema and I was very impressed, it looked like a genuinely thrilling movie and I couldn’t wait to see it, but then again aren’t trailers just designed to fool all? Well I wont say the trailer was totally dishonest, more trailers are but I’m glad the trailer mirrored the fast pace of the movie, as I genuinely thought this was movie was exciting. Jenny Lo herself is known for making certain types of movies. You know the type of movies that will guarantee box office success. This movie seemed to take quite a risk and play around with that idea. Is La Lopez trying to be taken seriously now? Well as all know this film failed to set the box office on fire, and was pretty much a disappointment. I just thought I’d mention that Jennifer Lopez was nominated for an Oscar for her moving performance in the movie based on the life of Selena. I didn’t actually know this, but I guess it just proves that Jennifer is a good actress; she just makes the movies that aren’t really challenging and just guarantee a certain amount of money in the bank. This film was released in America way back and I’d read several reviews of it, which weren’t very nice to be honest. This didn’t put me off though as I don’t personally believe the critics are ever right, you like what you like and you hate what you hate, it’s a matter of personal opinion right? Anyway as I’d found more and more out about this film I found out Bill Campbell was in it! Oh my god, Bill Campbell! I bet you’re all thinking who? Well this guy was one of my very first crushes; he cam
e in the movie The Rocketeer with Jennifer Connelly and Timothy Dalton. Anyway after that movie he didn’t really appear in anything else and I never saw him again…until now. He played such a nice guy in Rocketeer but in this he plays Jennifer’s abusive husband! Shock!! Ok here’s where the story begins. Slim is at work as a waitress with her best friend Ginny when a guy happens to be checking her out, Ginny forces her to do something and sparks begin to fly, that is until a guy from the next table stands up and asks the guy how much he bet his mate yesterday that he could get it on with Slim. Slim is shocked and that guy leaves as he is pretty much forced to. The guy who rescues Slim happens to be Mitch. The next scene is at Slim and Mitch’s wedding; they seem so happy, bless them! Slim then has Mitch’s baby, who happens to be the adorable Gracie. They seem so happy until Mitch gets paged whilst he’s in the shower, out of curiosity Slim phones the person who paged him to be answered to “Hey darling, where are you?” slim is absolutely shocked and confronts Mitch about it but he tries to explain that it’s ok to have sex with other women as they, in the long run mean absolutely nothing to him, it’s Slim and Gracie he really cares about. Slim is outraged and threatens to leave him when suddenly he hits her not once, but twice leaving her in a state of shock. Slim realises Mitch sleeps with other women on a regular basis and wants to get out of the marriage but only receives abuse from Mitch. As the movie continues Slim realises that Mitch just carries on getting more and more evil, which is a bit convenient as we, the audience are supposed to hate him with a passion, and well we do because he is just unreal, cheating on his wife and actually trying to convince her it’s a good thing! I didn’t like the fact that he was like this, I mean I think we were just forced to
hate him and not really form an opinion or our own. She relies on help from her closest friends but getting away from Mitch isn’t as easy as she thought, he will always want her no matter what but Slim really needs to get away from that. From the title you would guess that Slim has “enough” of this whole situation and needs to sort it out, but I’ll let you guess how that is. Although I thought this movie was quite good, I just thought some things in the movie were far too convenient, I’m not going to bother to tell you what they are as it’ll just ruin the story but you’ll know what I mean if you saw the movie. I’ve seen several movies about wives being abused and their extremely gritty and realistic but this movie lacks the realism of those movies (and real life experiences). The plot was quite thin to be honest, how many movies have we seen where a woman receives abuse from her seemingly perfect man and suddenly she has to go on the run with their beautiful kid, it’s like déjà vu. I still really enjoyed the movie but there was nothing really new that stood out to me, nothing separated this movie from all those other “my husband is a lying, cheating wife beating so and so” movies. In a way I think this movie would just be classed as another revenge film. From the first impression you would think there would be something totally different about this film, you know seeing Jennifer Lopez in some sporty gear, but I must say what is different about this movie to all those others could be quite offensive to some people, but I wont reveal what I mean, as I’ll just ruin the plot! Jennifer Lopez gave a good performance in my opinion. She usually stars in movies as a cop or a hot babe in a rom-com so for her to make a movie like this was a bit of a shock to say the least. Now people see jLo as a product to make wads of cash and nothing but, but I think she proved herse
lf in this movie, ok it wasn’t Oscar worthy but she has shown she can get away from romantic-comedies and do the more serious stuff just as well. I would love to see Jennifer in something as serious as this but more realistic, something she could really get her teeth into, I think she is capable (So how many of you disagree…lots I’m sure). Ok Bill Campbell was just great in this movie. He’s really changed from when I remember his sweet and innocent face…so as you can tell my crush didn’t really last as, man he’s really aged but still he did a fabulous job! I was really convinced he was a wife beater and comparing that to his other performances proved he is indeed a good actor. Tessa Allen who plays Jennifer Lopez’s precocious child Gracie, was really sweet, I thought she acted really well for a little kid, she looked convincingly scared when necessary which added more realism to the movie, I was impressed with her performance. Plus she was just adorable. I have to say that I think this movie was well directed, everything was done well, I just think the weak plot brought it done. There were just some aspects of the movie that were too unreal, but I think it’s a well-made movie and some fine performances were in here too. Looking at the movies box office takings shows that this wasn’t really a hit. The movie only managed to reach number 6 at the box office in America. I guess the movie didn’t really appeal to Jennifer fans as it was something pretty different, and well the reviews weren’t all that nice. I guess the critics just didn’t think much of the thin plot and probably were anti jLo. I would recommend this film to people who like drama based movies. I’m not sure if Jennifer Lopez fans would enjoy this but if you want to see your heroine actually acting then check this out. But don’t expect it to be like the wedding planner or
maid in Manhattan. My friend is a Jennifer Lopez fanatic and she didn’t even bother to see this, I was shocked but this movie isn’t really a type you would expect pop diva Lopez to make. She has no fancy clothes and not very much make up, which makes her look (dare I say it?) normal! Overall I thought this movie was good, but nothing special, I think it lacks realism. Just some aspects weren’t really based on reality; sometimes the scenes were quite convenient which really took away any realism the movie ever had. At some points in the movie I did feel it was slightly slow but that didn’t really occur too often, as there were parts in the movie that I felt like I was about to jump so I guess it was slightly thrilling. I’m glad it was quite fast paced though, saved it from being a total bore. There is nothing ground breaking or new about this movie, its just an old crowd pleaser, and if your happy with that I think you should check it out for sure. - 02/01/04 i agree. if jLo wants to do a more serious movie then I reckon she should have gone the whole hog; it started out as a film about the real, gritty issue of domestic violence, an important thing to be brought to audiences' attention. It should have continued this way but instead it became over exaggerated, over simplistic and the whole sham about mitch and the other guy having planned the everything from the moment they met slim was really unrealistic. Great review.

- 31/03/03 I wouldn't mind looking like an even 'normal' Jlo, lol |

- 30/03/03 Not heard of this one before to be honest. Not really my cup of tea though, especially as I've had quite enough of J Lo in Maid in Manhattan! :o) |
