... all of Tim's problems, but are they really the answers he's looking for. There was part of me that from the start wanted to love this film. The cast was really quite impressive and promised so much but the story was the biggest let down of the lot. No matter how much I tried to like it I just couldn't see the point in the script and more importantly there was no obvious reason why it was classed as a comedy. The direction is quite simple and seemingly just lets the film flow. Whether this is down to Levinson seeing...more

Premium Review Envy (DVD): Unenviable Envy (1013 words)
by - written on 29/03/06 (Very useful, 128 readings)
Rating:

I am a huge fan of Ben Stiller. He always made me laugh. I am also a fan of Jack Black, he is hilarious most of the time. It is for that very reason that I am more than shocked that “Envy” ranks amongst the worst movies I have seen in my life. Maybe it is because I recently just saw a lot of exceptional movies and this one did not come close to them. But more probably it was just because the movie was truly dreadful. ***The plot*** In the beginning of the movie you are introduced to Tim Dingman (Ben Stiller) and Nick Vanderpark (Jack Black) and their respective families. They both live in the poorer part of town, they both have two kids and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sh*t Doesn't Just Disappear! (857 words)

Rating:

When it comes to comedy actors two of the best in my opinion are Ben Stiller and Jack Black, so when the two of them are put into one film it's got to work hasn't it? Add to that the presence of director Barry Levinson, who brought us the delights of Toys and Good Morning Vietnam; it seems like a decent film in the making. Somewhere along the line it fell apart totally and the end result sees the co stars being funnier than the main big name stars. It seems that someone forgot to mention to writer Steve Adams that for a comedy to be successful it needs to be well funny for a start. Ben Stiller stars as Tim Dingman a man who is happy with every aspect of his ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Envy (DVD): Vapooriser leaves a funky smell (263 words)
by - written on 02/06/08 (Very useful, 68 readings)
Rating:

You would think that starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black this film would be a comedy that would have you rolling around with laughter, but unfortunately not. There are moments that will make you chuckle but nothing that produces that silent laugh brought on only when something is so funny you can't make a noise. I am a fan of both Stiller and Black and usually enjoy a comedy that has an element of slapstick and silliness; but this film was so random with Christopher Walken as the dodgy hobo it was a bit hit and miss. Stiller and Black are best buddies who live next to each other and work together. They are inventors and try to create the elusive ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A film about poo (235 words)
by - written on 20/10/08 (Very useful, 17 readings)
Rating:

Take Ben Stiller (who I don't overly care for anyway), Christopher Walken (who is normally amazing in most films he does) and Jack Black (who is mainly pretty funny) and put them in Envy. A film about excrement. And that should set the old alarm bells ringing right there. It hasn't? Wow, your dim! A friend lying to a friend about a missing dead pet horse (was that ever going to be funny? NO!). It then devolves into a blackmail movie with Walken holding Stiller to ransom with the threat of revealing to Black that Stiller killed his horse (this plot line could be derailed in seconds by Stiller just owning up. Black seems like enough of a friend to forgive him). ...  Read the complete review
