Advantages: It's short
Disadvantages: Blows your faith in human kind
I don't know what I was thinking but there was a morbid curiosity that came over me. No I hadn't just been handed a snuff film, instead I added Epic Movie to my rental queue. Yes that's right after being burned by the abomination that is Date Movie, I still felt it my duty to witness another cinema car crash.
All I can say is that I've taken one for the dooyoo team, it was the only way to save you, the reader from suffering this terrible fate.
Epic Movie is from the same team that brought you Date Movie, a film so bad that even Ed Wood was rolling in his grave. But I don't how they done it but they've managed to make another that is actually worse.
Just as Date Movie lamely spoofed the rom-com genre, Epic Movie pokes fun at those epic fantasy adventures like Narnia and Lord of the Rings. Except it doesn't it merely hands a loose plot on Narnia and then throws in any other movie that came out and was a success. So what you get is a Borat lookalike in a mankini copying Borat, there's no reason for this apart from the fact that Borat was funny, therefore someone copying him and saying the same line must be equally as funny - right?
Also chucked in are the likes of Superman Returns, X-Men and there were probably a load more but to be honest I can't remember as I'm trying to truly forget the experience. In fact I'm struggling to find a single titter in the whole thing. At least Date Movie has the likeable Alyson Hannigan, this has a cast of goons and bad comedians, all except Jennifer Coolidge and Fred Willard and when even they can't get a laugh you know you're in trouble.
I suppose the thing that really sums up the whole film is a sequence involving a Jack Sparrow impersonator and some kind of MTV rap video skit, I just don't get it, it ain't funny, it's just lazy. Heck they even try and spoof MTV cribs and it's just got no laughs.
That's because once again the makers have misunderstood the spoof genre. You have to have a plot and story to hang your jokes on. Like Date Movie, this is merely a rip off of other scenes in better movies with a kick in the nuts or something lame to try and get a rise out of the audience.
For the good of your health, please I implore you to avoid this movie at all costs, if you know anyone who likes it then move them out of your life now. It just saddens me that it got made and people actually paid to see it.
- The DVD -
Yes it's got a clean transfer as you'd expect. The sound mix doesn't lend itself to a home cinema set-up so just feed through the speakers of your TV - if you must.
- Extras -
Epic Movie is a disc full of bland featurettes featuring more attempts at crap humour complete with a gurning cast who think they're in the comedy sensation of the year. None of them serve to give the film any merit except one.
There is a featurette that features Fred Willard talking about his career in film, it's all tongue in cheek and actually funny, his story about Gone With The Wind has more laughs in one minute than the entire length of Epic Movie and that speaks volumes of the man's comic talent when given something good to work with.
There's also a commentary with the makers but if their film has got nothing to say then why would you bother listening to their inane jokes?
Sadly the disc doesn't contain a critics commentary like Date Movie otherwise there may have been something to make it worth putting the film in your dvd player.
- Finally -
Epic Movie is complete s**t - that is all.
Summary: From the makers of Date Movie - more crap
