Equilibrium (DVD) ... Christian Bale, Emily Watson ... / DVD released 06 October, 2003 at Momentum Pictures / Features of the DVD: PAL / A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, Equilibrium takes a respectable stab at a Fahrenheit 451-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression; if no-one feels anything, no-one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbours. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, Metropolis-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed prisoner (Emily Watson). Wimmer's wrongheaded martial arts/duelling guns motif is sheer silliness (a battle over a puppy doesn't help), but Equilibrium should be seen for Bale's moving performance as a man shocked back to human feeling. --Tom Keogh

... first time I saw this film the action literally took my breath away. It's on further watches that the film begins to reveal its subtleties. It's a fantastic setting, and the sets are very atmospheric. Fans of gothic science fiction settings should eat this up. There is religious imagery all over this film, subconsciously reinforcing the message of emotional repression. What's more the acting is top notch, with Christian Bale delivering yet another crushing performance. Alongside him we have great jobs done by Se...more

Premium Review Equilibrium (DVD): Equilibrium...all out of balance (744 words)
by - written on 10/12/07 (Very useful, 96 readings)
Rating:

I have just finished watching 'Equilibrium'. The Sci-Fi thriller set in post WWIII dystopia. Following the war, 'Father' decided that in order to survive, mankind must sacrifice the element of themselves that causes passion, and war, their ability to feel. Cut to not-so-horrifically-distant-future and a task force known as the Clerics are employed by the ruling force to destroy any uprising, individuals harbouring art, music, anything that encourages them to feel. Mercilessly efficient and deadly in their skills, the Clerics are the last line of defence against feeling. Last line past the social conditioning drug known as Prozium, which inhibits the ability to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Are you well balanced? (1643 words)

This film passed under my SciFi radar so when I watched Equilibrium (2002) I had no idea what to expect. I had never heard of the director, Kurt Wimmer but the main cast was fairly recognisable with the likes of Christian Bale, Sean Bean and Emily Watson. The film set in a post World War III world where in order to prevent another war the cause of war is punishable by death - that is to have and display emotion. The focus of the film is John Preston (Christian Bale) an emotionless Grammaton Cleric (highest of the government law enforcers, deadly killing machine and summary executioner) with the very best intuitive mind. In other words he knows what you are ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Equilibrium (DVD): Bale out we are going to crash! (976 words)

So just how silly is Equilibrium? Well watching this is just like you have walked in on some sort of practice session for the Matrix, lots of men in black flying around in ridiculous fight sequences clearly in need of some of those wire work special effects from the Wachowski Brother's superior trilogy to cushion their fall. This is a tacky hybrid to say the least, Christian Bale (as solemn as ever) more than a happy to ape Keanu Reeves, Neo character for a decent paycheck, taking the whole role far too seriously. Now I know some of the dooyoo girls like Mr Bale and so I will go easy on him, always a charismatic actor on screen, but this film is all rather ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Equlibrium (Movie only) (1542 words)

Personal Background: After hearing great things about the fight scenes in this movie I finally decided to actually you know, buy the damn thing rather than get told it was like a better version of the Matrix (which if truth be told, I loathed almost as much as I hate having water in my shoes whilst walking around the permanantley wet town of Paisley). Finally seeing this for 99p (bargain or what?) I thought right, I'll shut Andrew up and tell him I saw it and it was complete ghash, the kinda gash that at the time that West Ham United had been playing (both being huge football fans, that would have managed to make sense). However seeing the always sexy brooding and ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Equilibrium (DVD): Equilibrium: You don't live, you just exist (1469 words)

Somehow I have managed to miss this film every time it has been shown on TV, but I finally remembered to put it in my Sky Planner so it came on automatically when it was shown on Film Four earlier this week. It has been a film that I have wanted to watch for quite a while, so I made sure that I watched it, no matter what else I had to miss in the process! The film is completely intriguing to me. The ideas within it are completely fascinating, and thank goodness, something none of us will ever have to experience in our lifetime. The film is set in the 21st century, although we are not given a specific year, and it takes place sometime after a World War III and ...  Read the complete review
