Advantages: fun
Disadvantages: none
This film is pretty similar to its counterpart and predecessor 'Bruce Almighty', where Jim Carrey basically took on the role of God for a bit. In Evan Almighty, Steve Carrell stars as a US politician who is cast, by God, as a modern day Noah. He is charged with making an ark, and no matter how much he tries to ignore God, God won't ignore him.
This is a hard film to categorise. As a Christian, I was both amused and touched by the message of the film, which follows the Biblical principles in all the right places. It's a heartwarming, touching film that teaches us something about values. On the other hand, it's pretty funny, but in that 'family movie' kind of way where you would be happy for your kids to watch it.
Steve Carrell is an excellent actor. He's so lovable and disarms you with his personality. I love him in the US version of 'The Office', but he's quite different in this film. Really, he plays a nice guy in this one, and the character can be criticized for being fairly stereotypical in its portrayal of the working dad who keeps neglecting his kids.
The special effects are minimal and sparingly used, but when they do kick in they are genuinely entertaining and well put together.
For those who know their Bible, there are a whole heap of religious puns which are very good.
Morgan Freeman resumes his role from Bruce Almighty as God, and does a good job. I think it's his voice that makes him able to pull it off. It's only a small role for him, but he does it with such good grace that you are drawn to him.
All in all, this is a fun family film. If you know nothing of the Bible or Christianity, it still works as a fun film. I don't think it was made with any religious intention in mind, and it's not at all preachy. I just think they wanted to promote good values, and breath life into a well known tale.
Summary: do it
