Advantages: Heaven for musical fans.
Disadvantages: Virtually no dialogue, everything is sung which won't suit everyone.
I know what you're thinking: 'I HATE musicals'.
OK, I understand, but this is actually rather good.
If you know nothing about it then well: Madonna plays Eva Peron wife of the famous Argentinian President.
She has grown up as a working class girl and follows a sad and turbulent life to end up where she is today and this is exactly why the people of Argentina love her so much.
One thing you have to know about this film is that it is a musical through and through but that is how it was written originally so don't expect the spoken version of Evita.
The songs are performed so well and as they are mixed in with sometimes dramatic acting performances it all rolls along very well indeed.
The main characters are Madonna, Jonathan Pryce, Antonio Banderas and (oh my god) Jimmy Nail. Believe me, Mr.Nail is actually VERY good in this so forgive my mickey-taking.
The story is indeed not all jolly and happy in fact all best musicals are about tragedy. There are some fantastically uplifting sections including near the beginning 'Buenos Aires' a great performance by madonna.
The sad parts will have you reaching for the Kleenex though and if you're not even slightly upset during the 'You must love me' song then you're probably not human!
The music is just incredible, the performances are superb and the story really does hit you full on.
A great musical mixed with first class movie magic is a hit in my books.
