One of the first anime series I ever saw, this remains my favourite. It differs somewhat from it's corresponding manga, but this is actually a refreshing idea in this case. Instead of directly following the manga's story, it sets the scene with the Manga's author selling the rights to it to various people who want to transform excel saga into a different kind of anime. In effect, then, it becomes a series of parodies of various anime and movie genres, all of which are spot-on and hilarious. Just when you thought mainstream anime couldn't get much weirder, along comes Excel to prove just how nuts it can be. Originally a published manga it was made into an anime series lasting 25 episodes, with 26 shown on the DVDs. It spoofs almost every kind anime show to come before it, even flat out referencing some of the major genre defining series such as Gundam and Dragonball to name but two. Even the title sequence for the show has the phrase "Quack Experimental Anime" in it.
