Advantages: Cinematography, Robert Patrick
Disadvantages: Acting, Script
It must be difficult to peak so early in your career as Stallone did in the excellent 'Rocky' and he has never really matched that performace although he has come close in the witty 'Tango and Cash' and the excellent star studded but low budget 'Cop Land'.
D-Tox is another of those films that has failed to put him back amongst the top actors with a pretty poor script not backed up by any quality acting. However if his reported paycheck of £20m for this and other equally bad films of late is correct you could be froced into believing he is just in it for the money.
I do not think this is entirely the case however i believe he needs to pick better scripts than this if he wants to get back to the top where he once was.
Now to the film, it centers on Stallones character who upon checking into a specialist clinic for burnt out cops starts to realise all is not well when his fellow patients start being killed one by one.
The film does have its exciting parts and it does produce some tension but this is fleeting as you sit through it thinking you have seen it all before.
That is also true to the actors who appear in the film all of whom have seen thier best days past, Robert Patrick never lived upto his role in 'Terminator 2', and Tom Berringer who only has a smallish role doesnt even seem as if he is trying.
The film could have been so much better as the situation does intrigue, however so much more could have been done with the script which borders in some instances on intelligent.
The visuals and cinematography from the great Dean Semler ('Last Action Hero', 'Bruce Almighty'), is the one saving grace of this film as at times they are stunning and the dark rooms and corridors add more to the tension than anything else comes close to. Even the directing from Jim Gillespie ('I Know What You Did Last Summer') seems tired and uninspired.
I would only recomend this to the diehard Stallone fans or people who want a film that will not challenge them.
