Face/Off is without a doubt one of the best John Woo "gun ballet" style movie ever made.
Although the story about an agent, Sean Archer who switches faces wit a terrorist Castor Troy, for the purpose of getting some information from his brother and then the bad guy gets his hands on agent Archer face is Sci-Fi. But, the science fiction factor is set in the background and action is the mange genre. And, there is A LOT of action. There is constantly someone shooting at another. Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are always trying to kill each other. Emptying one clip after another. Bullets , flaying every were. It's a one showdown after another.
Movie is full of John Woo trademarks - slow motions, white pigeon, two guns... and he had use them well.
Of course if you aren't action fan you will find the movie doll and boring, childish. But if you like action movie you will enjoy the whole hour and a half.
As I said, directing is excellent. And, acting is superb. Bad / Good guy Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, are excellent, there isn't any other combination of actors who could perform this two role so good. Now as for the other roles goes, Joan Allen as Mrs. Archer is good to and Alessandro Nivola as Pollux Troy is good, but doesn't portraits the schizophrenic part of the role very well, but who cares.
Soundtrack is like action, strong and powerful.
