I bought this DVD nearly 2 years ago now and it was only recently as I had seen the trailers on the TV for the remake of the film that I decided I would dust it off and give it a watch. I was expecting good things from the film as I can vaguely remember the TV series of the same name being so popular, I have to say I was very disappointed by it. It is the audition time at the School of Performing Arts in New York City and so many people have turned up hoping to get a place and make it in the big time. We move through the auditions and see some very funny auditions and on the other hand some very good ones. We then start the new school terms and find out how ... Read the complete review

“You got big dreams? You want fame? Well fame costs and right here is where you start paying…in sweat” How many times did I hear that as a kid? I was a dancer when I was younger (and fitter and thinner) and this catch phrase from Fame was what I lived by. Anyway, I’m wandering off from what I wanted to say. Fame the series is getting a rerun on Granada Plus starting August 30th 2001. I personally think that the series was far better than the film and it is definitely on the must watch list. Fame was a musical released in 1980 and the series was the spin off that followed. I have to admit, Yes! I bought the ... Read the complete review

If you've never seen Fame you might dismiss this as a fluffy sugary film about kids that want to be famous. Well, it isn't quite that. It is actually quite a dark film about kids that want to be famous, but have lots of emotional baggage that may or may not help them in their quest to the top. It follows a core group of students through their 4 years at the High School of Performing Arts: from auditions to get in until the graduation show. It shows us how these kids find themselves (or become someone else) in the quest for Fame. This film, directed by Alan Parker, has some beautifully shot scenes that are almost black except for someone's ... Read the complete review

I love musicals but fame has to be one of my favourites. It takes people from all walks of life (yes, I know it sounds cheesy) and puts them in a performing arts school where nothing else matters. However, cheese aside, Fame deals with matters such as abortion, racism, drugs, suicide and all manner of other important items but without getting too bogged down in sentimentality. Okay, so there is no actual conclusion except for a massive finale featuring dancing, singing and music and depending on your optimism you could belive that the graduating class will in time become waiters or "stars". Don't be fooled into believing that the title song is the only ... Read the complete review
