I saw this was being shown on Sky Movies ages ago so I recorded it because after reading the plot it looked like something I might enjoy.
Barry is a bit of a womaniser. He loves to go out and have fun with his friends, hopefully picking up a woman along the way. He isnt interested in committment despite having a girlfriend.
One day he goes to the cinema and whilst there a girl starts chatting to him. She asks him to sit with her and he agrees. He does think she is being a little full on but despite his efforts to get her to stop she wont. That is until her father walks in. Her father happens to be carrying a trumpet (!) and decides that it is his duty to smash Barry where it hurts.
A few hours later he wakes up in hospital, his mother at his side. What has happened to his Family Jewels?
I didnt really have any expectations of this film, before seeing that it was being shown on Sky I dont think I had actually heard of it. In the plot it said it was a comedy so when I watched it this morning I was hoping for some lighthearted fun whilst I was studying.
Initially I didnt particularly like the character of Barry as I thought he was a little bit of a sleaze and of course a player. However, when Barry woke up in hospital and then tried to carry on with his life I did warm to him a little. Partly out of sympathy but also because he did actually seem to change during this time. You saw his relationship with his mother and realised that actually he was a kind and gentle man.
Barry does get a shock a while after returning home. I'm not going to say what it is because I dont want to spoil it for anyone who may be thinking of watching it. However, this is a good twist to the plot and it did definitely make the film what it was.
The plot flowed really well and I enjoyed watching the film very much. It definitely was a little bit of a surprise how interesting and funny I found it because I wasnt expecting a great deal - just a run of the mill comedy.
The plot is a little predictable however there are plenty of twists and turns along the way that I definitely wasnt expecting. There is a particular twist about 2/3 of the way through the film that I certainly wasnt expecting!
The acting in the film was really good and I found all the characters believable and realistic. I didnt watch any of the actors without seeing them as their character only.
The film was released in 2011.
It stars Patrick Wilson, Chloe Sevigny and Judy Greer.
It runs for 94 minutes.
The DVD is currently available on Amazon for the bargain price of just £2.64.
A very good comedy film, perfect for a lazy afternoon.
