Advantages: Takes on a tough issue, badly, but takes it on
Disadvantages: This is absolute rubbish
Up and down the country, there are men and women who have tried everything in their struggle to control their weight. Research shows that in many cases the reason that they fail, is because of lack of motivation. It can be hard to stick at something, especially if you cannot see what harm it can cause. This is the reason that cigerette packs now carry graphic pictures of the effects of smoking, so that we can see the pain and suffering they inevitably create. But if motivation is needed, then this is the movie to watch. This film is a surreal look at the underworld of the internet. It looks at a practice called 'feederism'. Basically this comes down to a person loving food so much, that they allow themselves to be force fed, and grow bigger for sexual gratification. I was never as glad to be slim, as I was when I saw this film!
My most recent craze is to see some of the worlds more shocking films. Banned films, and disturbing ones. Partly because I have grown bored with the traditional horror genre, and partly because I am a bit of a sicko! Sowhen I saw this film in HMV, I was intrigued. When a film has comments comparing it to se7en on the cover, you assume quality. However, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, about halfway through, I was unsure if I could stomach any more (sorry!).
An Australian cybercop, called Phillip (Patrick Thompson.), stumbles accross a truly bizzarre website where women are allowing themselves to be force fed and viewed on a webcam, for their own sexual gratification, and also that of the watchers. They even go as far as to have blood pressure monitors hooked up to them, so watchers can place bets on when they will die. Phillip is able to track the site owner to a Michael Carter, who is in America. So off he goes, without the consent of his boss to find him. But, it transpires that when Philip gets to America, and confronts Michael, that the two know eachother. A personal war follows, where we learn a few bad secrets from both of their lives, and we start to wonder just who is worse.....
The film itself is marked down as a psychological thriller. The reality of it is that it is designed to gross you out. It does this, at least, quite well. It is truly disgusting, and is hard to watch in places. But at the same time, it means that plot is limited to say the least. Combine this with a budget of about two pound fifty, and we got ourselves a real stinker. The film seems to insult a wide range of people. Both skinny people, and fat people. Internet users, and especially those who use the net for sexual reasons. In fact, in many ways it insults us all, by expecting us to pay for it!!!
The film is about how the internet exploits people, and how this is wrong. But what we are in fact watching, is the biggest piece of exploitation that I have seen in a long time. Films like Hostel, or saw exploited the fact that the new generation of horror film viewer needs more. We have seen it all before, so we need new shocks. And we got them, all with a nicely polished finish. But with Feed, we get new shocks, just for the sake of it. There is no quality to the film, and it just isn't good enough to compete. We endure sick feeding scenes, graphic sex scenes and a lot of food play. Apart from that, we have not got enough story to keep us watching.
Okay, so I watched the film in its entirity. I wanted a gross film, and the sheer sickness of the film made me persevere. And, although that doesn't make me look too good, I had paid for it so I was gonna watch it. But the film is too cheesy to be properly disturbing. Parts of it are accidentally funny! Also the camera work is very bad. The camera actually wobbles at some points. There is just no real quality. If you are a fan of the new horror genre, then stick with Saw, Hostel or The hills have eyes. Alternatively, for a real look at extreme films that are good, try Salo, Requiem for a dream or Ichi the killer. These films will stick with you for the right reasons. Unlike feed, which sticks to you like the cheese out of a Mcdonalds burger!
Dont bother. G
Summary: A looks at the world of internet exploitation, done badly.
