Premium Review Felon (DVD): How did this slip under the big film radar? (518 words)
by - written on 29/10/09 (Very useful, 17 readings)
Rating:

What I figured was going to be an extremely run of the mill ended up being a riveting prison drama, as a man protecting his family ends up convicted of involuntary manslaughter and finding himself sent to a corrupt prison where he must watch his back and fight his own corner f he wants to survive and see his family again. Stephen Dorff stars as Wade Porter, who chases a man from his home and strikes him with a baseball bat when he reaches for his pocket. He finds himself sharing a cell with a man who has killed violently, and becomes a source of entertainment for other inmates and the guards. He realises he has to man up around the yard if he is to survive his ...  Read the complete review

I rented this movie yesterday, not having heard of it before, but as I saw a few very famous names on the cover, I decided to give it a try. Felon is a 2008 film directed and written by Ric Roman Waugh. It follows Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) a hardworking father of one, who lives with his girlfriend Laura (Marisol Nichols). Wade was just given a loan to expand his business, and life is looking good at last. That all changes when a burglar enters their house one night, and Wade accidentally kills him, as he thought the man was armed. The case goes to court, and Wade gets convicted to three years in prison. On the bus on the way to the prison, he is framed, and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Felon (DVD): Strike one (265 words)

Felon is a film that never really got the credit it deserved when it was released an it is a gritty hard hitting prison thriller that is definately well worth watching. The film stars the excellent Stephen Dorff alongside Val Kilmer. Dorff plays Wade Porter who disturbs an intruder in his home and acting like any protective family man he chases the man out of the house before hitting him in the head with a baseball bat when he fears his life is in danger as the man apparently reaches for a weapon, he ends up in jail convicted of manslaughter and the prison he ends up in is both violent and the administration is corrupt. Having heard a basic synopsis of this movie, I just knew it would not be disappointing. The opening sequence is one of relative normality, with Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff - Blade) coming back from a morning run, to get round to some household errands. His fiancée and son are indoors and making plans for their impending nuptials. The actual story begins when an intruder is found in their home, Wade chases this man with a baseball bat through the house, to his front garden. The culprit reaches into his pocket for something, which Wade believes to be a weapon, and delivers a single fatal blow to his head. Wade is arrested and charged with murder. During his ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Felon (DVD): Great performances elevate standard prison film (285 words)
by - written on 26/07/09 (Useful, 8 readings)
Rating:

Felon is a film that sadly went straight to DVD in most territories, except the United States, where it saw a very, very small theatrical release. It's a shame that solid dramas like this can't find an audience when every Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie that comes out finds huge financial success. Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) is a man who's just sorting his life out - he's about to marry, and is getting money together for his own business. However, he suffers a home invasion, and chases the criminal out onto the lawn and strikes him with a baseball bat, killing him. He is sentenced to prison for manslaughter, and his self-defence plea is rejected, causing ...  Read the complete review
