Advantages: Great plotline and using the real exciting events of 1989 helped a lot
Disadvantages: Real lack of chemistry between the two main characters
Most Sports films are like Yorkie's, they're " Not for Girls" !! I probably wouldn't sit down with the missus and watch "Escape to Victory" with my wife and expect her to be entertained for 90 minutes ( Much like an actual football match !! ) but with Fever Pitch its different, its a sports movie, but follows a different path.
It is the 1988 - 1989 Football Season and lifelong Arsenal fan and teacher Paul Ashworth ( Colin Firth ) is growing ever worried that his team will let him down once again and fail to win the league championship, also he meets and starts a relationship with fellow teacher Sarah ( Ruth Gemmill ), it becomes very apparent that his passion for his team and his relationship with Sarah are not going to go hand in hand very well, as she doesn't understand football at all and feels that the typical football fan is quite "yobbish" and not her kind of person, and the remainder of the movie is spent seeing if the two of them can truly make a relationship work and keep Paul's love for Arsenal alive
This is a 1997 film adaptation of the Nick Hornby book of the same name, and while I loved the book, the movie doesn't quite fill me with the same joy, its a very exciting plot and the real life events of the final game of the season with Arsenal clinching the title at the last minute provides some genuine excitement, my main problem with fever pitch is I never quite believe in the chemistry between the two main characters, my wife does have a soft spot for Colin Firth which helped alot with getting her to watch fever pitch, but she , much like myself felt that although the romantic plot between the two characters worked, you never truly believed that they were an item.
Overall its a very good sports movie and something a little different from the typical " Team of underdogs, triumphs at the last minute" but its certainly not something that someone will want to watch over and over again.
Summary: Good, and worth a watch, especiall if you're a "Gooner"
