Fierce Creatures (DVD) ... Lee Curtis ... / DVD released 14 April, 2003 at 4 Front Video / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / In an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle, John Cleese wrote Fierce Creatures with the purpose of reuniting the comedic cast of A Fish Called Wanda. Media mogul (Kevin Kline) owns a London zoo. He demands that the park raise more profit, so the new zoo director (Cleese) orders that only dangerous animals be displayed in order to maximize ticket sales. In a dual role, Kline also plays the mogul's son, who plans to run the zoo with the help of displaced employees (including Michael Palin) and zoo programmer Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis). The situation lends itself to comedic confusion and split-second timing, and for a few good laughs the film is a pretty safe bet. It's not as hilarious as A Fish Called Wanda (that's a pretty tall order), but Cleese knows comedy, and his efforts are worth a look. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

... message isn't developed in some clever way, and the whole film to me felt devoid of any direction. When the film was originally made, when it was shown in cinemas the audiences were unimpressed at the ending. So eight months later they got together the original cast, got a new director as the previous one was working on a new film, and they reshot the ending sequence. That to me doesn't show a desire for perfection, it more suggests that a weak script was delivered in the first place that required such a reshoot. John...more

Crowned Review Fierce Creatures (DVD): A Fish Called Wanda meets the zoo! (753 words)
by - written on 12/02/08 (Very useful, 42 readings)
Rating:

Fierce Creatures is effectively the sequel to "A Fish Called Wanda", although a totally different plot, the cast and crew are very similar. The film was originally released in 1997 and is 93 minutes long. The basic plot of the film is that a tycoon takes over a zoo and wants to obtain as much profit as possible. So a decision is made to only keep the fierce creatures and get rid of the smaller more cuddly ones. Numerous directors try to take as much money a possible by making commercial deals, which have little benefit for the zoo or its aims of conservation. There is a wealth of talented and well-known actors in the film, John Cleese, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Nearly, but not quite (178 words)
by - written on 10/10/00 (Very useful, 12 readings)
Rating:

Inevitably disappointing sort-of-sequel to 'A Fish Called Wanda' with the core team of Cleese, Palin, Kline and Curtis in different roles, negotiating a farce about big business taking over a small zoo. In comparison to its illustrious predecessor, this is a relatively weak film, lacking the brilliantly written plot and endlessly quotable lines. In contrast, the plotting of 'Fierce Creatures' is woolly and haphazard, and the comedy relies heavily on standard farce elements like Cleese's consistently being caught with young ladies in their underwear. In itself, of course, Cleese constantly being caught with young ladies in their ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Fierce Creatures (DVD): Fawlty Towers in a zoo! (133 words)
by - written on 31/10/00 (Useful, 51 readings)
Rating:

I was looking forward to seeing Fierce Creatures as I am huge fan of Fawlty Towers. John Clease is a comical genius so I thought that this film would be very funny. Well I wasnt disappointed. Fierce Creatures is a very funny film and has some scenes which are very similar to those done in Fawlty Towers. It is not as good as Fawlty Towers but this movie is certainly better than A Fish Called Wanda. Jamie Lee Curtis is also very good in this movie and looks very sexy for here age. The film is based around a zoo and the people who worked there are trying to keep it open. If you like movies which will make you laugh then this is certainly one of them. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Flopped completely! (133 words)
by - written on 16/09/00 (Somewhat useful, 28 readings)
Rating:

I think this is carry on film from the one after 'A Fish Called Wanda' as it has exactly the same actors. Except they are all on a different location, a zoo! Yes, there is a tremendous threat to the zoo closing and they have to find a way to help rescue it. Some bit can be a little funny but it's not hilarious. I didn't laugh very much at all actually. It's a bit sad compared to 'A Fish Called Wanda' as that was a brilliant movie. The most funniest bit that I remember is when they all had to dress up in costumes and put a bloke in a gorillas costume. I guess you can figure out what happens next! ...  Read the complete review
