Advantages: Great twist and acting
Disadvantages: Confusing and very dark at times
David Fincher's 1999 film Fight Club is twisting and turning thriller, providing a bit of excitement and a lot of confusion to the watcher.
The Plot
Ja ck is a chronic insomniac who becomes obsessed with self-improvement groups. He finds himself going regularly to such groups. It is here he meets Marla Singer, a woman who goes to these groups for the same reason - there is nothing wrong with her other than the fact that going to the groups gfives her something else to do in her life. On a flight, Jack meets Tyler Durden, a travelling salesman with seemingly no care in the world. He believes in the opposite to Jack, that self-destruction is the way forward. Before long, they have a fight in an underground car park, and both enjoy the rush from it. They seek like-minded individuals who want to vent their frustrations in a controlled fight club where the first rule is that you do not talk about Fight Club!
The Cast and Performances
Edward Norton is outstanding as Jack, and he plays the emotions very well. Helena Bonham Carter performs well as Marla Singer, and there is a good supporting cast from a host of names including eat Loaf and Jared Leto. But it is Brad Pitt who steals the show as Tyler Durden, the stranger who is everything Jack wants to be. Pitt is marvellously in this role, where he is once again directed by Fincher, as he was in Seven.
My Opinion
This is a wonderful film. It is very confusing pretty much all the way through, and there are constantly twists, which do in the end culminate in a wonderful and magnificent final twist. Well directed, well acted, and highly recommended. The film's darkness in places does very well in heightening the mood of the film, which is constantly changing. The whole package is dealt with very well. At times, it does threaten to lose the viewer, and I would not be surprised if the nature of the film puts people off as well as some turning off in the middle due to confusion.
Conclusion
A very good film all round, if a little off-putting through confusion at times.
I rate this film as 4 stars out of 5.
The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98.
