Advantages: Spectacular film, pensive, intelligent
Disadvantages: Sometimes long, consistently dark
Do not judge 'Fight Club' by it's name. Rather than being some violent action Rambo-style time-waster as it's name suggests, this film is a faithful adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's fascinating book. This film is actually an intelligent psychological drama - and while it has some brutality and 'smut' in it hence making it unsuitable for those of a 'nervous' disposition, it's all completely justified and part of the story. To give the entire plot away would be to spoil the entire film, and indeed the book - so suffice to say that it revolves around the narrator's strange relationship with 'Tyler Durden', a painfully down-to-earth character who seeks the regression to normal human motives - violence, survival etc. The story is told wonderfully, with dark humour, moving insights into modern-day life - special effects, camera work all blend together to form quite an intriguing cinematic experience. Subtle hints are spliced into the action, leading towards a mind-boggling twist. The soundtrack is hard-core and industrial, yet suits the dark sordid nature of the film. Basically, one of my favourite films of all time - a little long, a little slow in places - and very americanised, but all-in-all a very memorable and exciting film containing some genuinely interesting opinions.
