Disadvantages: Very Little Fighting, Poor Dialogue
[Film Only Review]
After really enjoying the movie 'Never Back Down' I saw the trailer for this movie and thought it would be a long the same lines.
I wasn't in a rush to see it, but was looking forward to it when I finally got a chance.
~~~ Plot ~~~
After getting into a brawl on the street, Shawn MacArthur is spotted as a potential bare-knuckle fighter by Harvey Boarden. Harvey becomes Shawn's agent and they attempt to make some money in a bid to attempt there usual "day jobs" of selling merchandise and counterfeit goods.
~~~ Cast ~~~
Channing Tatum ... Shawn MacArthur
Terrence Howard ... Harvey Boarden
Zulay Henao ... Zulay Velez
~~~ Opinion ~~~
I'll get straight to the point - this movie was rubbish. For a movie to be called fighting and then have very little fighting in it is very disappointing.
To compensate for this you would expect a pretty solid storyline, which would hold your attention. This doesn't happen either.
The whole movie just seems to be full of a fight now and again, then Harvey saying in a long drawn out way how much money they could make in the next fight. This got really annoying, because the way Harvey speaks is very annoying and I really wanted Shawn to just fight him - hopefully ending both Harvey's life and the movie.
Apart from talking slowly, Terrance Howard does put in quite a strong performance. A few parts in the movie you feel quite sorry for him, but then once he begins speaking again, it's back to being annoyed.
The fights themselves aren't particularly anything special either. Spinning kicks and martial-arty moves are few and far between. The fights generally just involve some punching and then some rolling on the ground, followed by a strangle hold. Oh the excitement!
As with all movies the main character has a love interest, in this case Zulay. I usually have no interest in this side of the movie, because it's all the same, but this time this aspect of the movie was almost more entertaining than the main story.
~~~ Summary ~~~
Overall, I really didn't enjoy this. I took two breaks in the movie, which resulted in the movie taking me 3 days to watch.
Wouldn't recommend to anyone, if you're looking for a good fighting movie then watch 'Never Back Down'. If you want a movie with some fighting and an excellent story watch 'Fight Club'.
4/10
