This is a nine-film boxset, available from amazon at the moment for a very reasonable £15 (its usual price is £30). Film noir was a style of thriller that developed in Hollywood in the mid 1940s, and lasted maybe ten years. It represents the first signs of American audiences starting to demand something a bit more adult from their entertainment, or at least something that we'd recognise as adult today. Hollywood's production code in the 1930s had effectively done away with such things as onscreen adulterous relationships, or the notion that under certain circumstances, actually crime *does* pay.
